On iPhone Duo, Apple includes a display setting for cases or frames that partially cover the left edge of the outer display. It's called Shift Left Edge, and it insets the display edge so that on-screen content isn't hidden beneath the case.
We first covered the setting in September, and Apple has since documented it, revealing that when you fit Apple's official iPhone Duo Case, a prompt automatically appears on the display to direct you to the setting. However, you can also turn it on manually at any time for third-party cases.
How to Turn On Shift Left Edge
Open the Settings app on your iPhone Duo.
Tap Display & Brightness.
Toggle on Shift Left Edge, then tap Enable in the prompt that appears.
The final prompt will tell you that your iPhone Duo needs to restart to apply the setting, but it's not a full reboot, and you'll be returned to the same settings screen after a brief black screen.
If you subsequently swipe up to the Home Screen, you'll notice a narrow black border on the left side of the outer screen to accommodate the front portion of the case, leaving no content obscured.
Apple offers two official cases for its new foldable: the aforementioned iPhone Duo Case, and a Folio with Kickstand that causes no such display occlusion.
Teardown site iFixit took apart the iPhone Duo to see what's inside, how it holds up to dust, and how repairable it is. There's a video walking through the teardown, as well as a blog post summing it up.
Before opening up the Duo, iFixit inundated it with fluorescent dust. The iPhone Duo has an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, which means it's sealed against dust. iFixit found dust in the USB-C port, speaker mesh, and bezel, but few particles reached the internals of the device.
Particles did infiltrate the hinge, causing it to crunch, and that could lead to screen damage. The iPhone Duo's hinge gathered less dust than the Galaxy Z Fold8 or the Pixel 11 Pro Fold during similar tests. iFixit said the result is "encouraging," but suggested it's not a great device for the beach because some dust still got to moving parts. YouTuber JerryRigEverything also did a dust test where particles entered the hinge and caused the magnets that hold the phone shut to fail.
iFixit was able to peel the cover layer away easily, which is as Apple intended. Apple made the nano-texture cover layer simple to remove so it could be replaced inexpensively, but you're not supposed to take it off on your own. With AppleCare+, replacing the cover layer is $19, and it's $49 without it.
The iPhone Duo uses the battery adhesive Apple introduced with the iPhone 16, so a small electrical charge loosens the adhesive and allows the batteries to be removed. iFixit said it was the "best battery removal experience" from a foldable to date.
The outer display was easy to take off, and iFixit said the construction is "robust," which is a plus for repairability since most internal repairs have to go through the outer display. The inner screen trim comes off with heat, but there is a lot of adhesive to get through to remove the inner panel.
Apple describes the iPhone Duo's inner display as a 10-layer stack, and iFixit was able to peel back some of the layers to get a look at them under the microscope.
The iPhone Duo uses an unstacked logic board, and it's the first iPhone to do so since the iPhone 8. The single-layer design is one way Apple kept the Duo thin.
iFixit commented on some of the display failures people have been seeing, suggesting they could be caused by pressure, a trapped particle, repeated bending, or a manufacturing defect. It may not be that the display has physically snapped, because a wiring problem can cause the same effect.
Where most of the faulty units are experiencing issues, the hinge has a different shape. The failure spot is also near where the accordion cable passes by and where several edges meet, which could be leading to a concentration of stress in that spot. From iFixit:
To see where the stresses build up from folding, we built a 3D hinge model from teardown footage, patents, and CT scans, then compared it with the reported damage locations. The breaks cluster near the transition from the gap for the crossing flex cable to the central hinge support. The damage we're seeing in photos isn't right where the display cable passes through the hinge, but slightly lower, at a point where several edges meet and change how the thin display is supported as it bends.
iFixit said it could also be the curved rails of the hinge that follow the screen's pivot points. The curved rails may be lifting above the flat plates of the hinge as the phone closes, and one rail lines up with the damage. It's possible a hinge component that's meant to retract isn't doing so, but there's no clear answer. The site has an interactive CT scan of the iPhone Duo's hinge that shows how the supports, cable, and components fit beneath the display for anyone who wants to take a look.
With a repair manual available on day one, an option to remove the outer display intact, and batteries that release with an electrical charge, iFixit gave the iPhone Duo a provisional repair score of 5 out of 10. The inner display and hinge assembly are the biggest vulnerabilities, which cost the Duo points. "This is the most repairable foldable smartphone we've seen so far, and it's still going to be a bear to repair," said iFixit.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold both scored 4 out of 10.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman today reported that Apple is facing a growing problem where some people will buy iPhones or other products and either remove accessories from the box, open up the device and remove components, and/or remove the entire device, and then attempt to return the box hoping that the employee will not notice.
When a customer seeks to return an iPhone, he said that Apple's retail employees have ordinarily been instructed to open the box and verify the contents, but Apple has since come up with a solution that will cut down on wasted inventory.
In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said Apple has provided retail employees with a device that can "scan an in-box iPhone and run diagnostics on it to make sure the phone is fully intact, leaving the box sealed and able to be put back into inventory." Apple began rolling out this feature on the device earlier this month, he said.

Apple plans to unveil 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with touch-enabled OLED displays on Wednesday, October 28, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Those invited to Apple's "Pro and tell" experience in Los Angeles at 10 a.m. Pacific Time on that day will likely receive hands-on time with the laptops after they are announced in a press release.
In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman reiterated that these MacBook Pro models will look similar to the current models, but weigh less and feature a Dynamic Island instead of a notch at the top of the screen. He previously reported that the laptops will be powered by Apple's existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips released back in March.
With a costlier OLED display, the new MacBook Pro models are expected to be more expensive. In the U.S., pricing for the existing models with mini-LED displays and M5 Pro and M5 Max chips starts at $2,499 for the 14-inch model and at $2,999 for the 16-inch model, and starting prices for the new models could be up to $500 higher.
macOS Golden Gate is said to feature a "dynamic interface" for touch input.
"The system will take previous interactions into account, presenting controls based on whether someone has been touching the display or using the trackpad," explained Gurman. "Touching a button can also bring up a menu around the user's finger, while the Dock and Menu Bar have been optimized for touch."
Apple will position touch as an additional input method that customers can use when it makes sense, alongside the keyboard and trackpad, he said.
The existing MacBook Pro models with mini-LED displays will remain part of Apple's lineup for now, but they will eventually be discontinued, he added.
Apple is considering changes to Safari on the iPhone Duo that would give websites access to more of the outer display, although the company has yet to settle on an approach.
The challenge is allowing pages to occupy the area beneath Safari's side-mounted controls without making parts of a website inaccessible. In an Friday, October 23 WebKit post, Apple's Jen Simmons explained that an existing web setting could enable this, but Apple's research suggests many sites would not handle it correctly.
That setting, viewport-fit="cover", allows a webpage to expand into areas that would otherwise be reserved. Website developers must then leave enough space around important content to prevent it from being covered by the interface. According to Simmons, many sites fail to make those allowances on every edge.
Apple is investigating whether another solution could offer developers more control with less risk of obscuring content. A header's background could, for example, span the screen while its navigation links remain within the unobstructed portion.
For now, Safari 27.1 restricts webpages to the area beside the controls and uses the page's background color to fill the remaining strip. This limits the width available for content on the outer display.
The arrangement stems from the screen's proportions. Apple placed controls along the side of the device because the outer display is shorter and wider than other iPhone screens, preserving more height for apps and webpages.
Separately, Safari 27.1 adds automatic two-page PDF viewing when the iPhone Duo is held partially folded like a book. Flattening or closing the device returns the document to a single-page view.
Developers can also test experimental support for detecting the screen's folding posture and positioning content around the device's middle fold. Those features are available behind Safari feature flags, while the proposed change to content beneath the controls remains under investigation.
Instagram is now available on the Apple TV, bringing Reels, longer videos, and live shows via the platform to Apple's streaming device for the first time.
The Instagram app for Apple TV lets users watch content from their favorite creators, discover videos, and resume watching across devices. Instagram describes the app as a way to watch together with friends and family, extending its video experience to the television.
The app appears to have launched on October 23. Apple's TV-specific release metadata dates version 66.0 to that day, while an archived App Store listing from October 19 still showed compatibility with only the iPhone and iPad.
Instagram first began testing its TV app on Amazon Fire TV devices in the United States in December 2025, before expanding to Google TV in February 2026 and Samsung smart TVs in June. The initial experience focused on Reels organized into channels based on viewers' interests, with videos playing automatically.
In June, Meta outlined plans to expand beyond short videos with longer creator content, episodic series, and live broadcasts. The Apple TV app's description lists longer videos and live shows alongside Reels.
The release follows Instagram's dedicated iPad app, which arrived in September 2025 after years of requests for an interface designed for Apple's tablets.
Instagram is now available on the Apple TV App Store. It requires tvOS 26.0 or later.
Apple and M. Night Shyamalan have won an appeal in the copyright dispute over Apple TV series "Servant," with a federal appeals court upholding last year's jury verdict in their favor (via Reuters).
In its October 22 decision, the Ninth Circuit rejected filmmaker Francesca Gregorini's arguments that problems with the jury instructions and an unanswered question from jurors warranted overturning the result.
Gregorini sued in January 2020, alleging that the first three episodes of "Servant" copied her 2013 film "The Truth About Emanuel." Both stories involve a grieving mother who treats a doll as a living baby and a young caregiver. A jury unanimously ruled for Apple, Shyamalan, and the other defendants on January 24, 2025, according to the final judgment.
The appeal focused on whether jurors received enough guidance to assess if the show's creators could have encountered Gregorini's film. The court found that the instructions were adequate and that the judge could accept the unanimous verdict before answering the jury's request for clarification.
The lawsuit was initially dismissed in 2020, then revived on appeal in 2022 before proceeding to trial. "Servant" stars Lauren Ambrose, Toby Kebbell, Nell Tiger Free, and Rupert Grint, with Shyamalan serving as an executive producer.
An iPhone Duo owner has shared a Touch ID tip on Reddit they claim is "arguably better than Face ID." It involves registering the lowest part of your index finger instead of the pad of your fingertip. The poster says this segment rests naturally against the side button during pickup and unlocks the phone as you lift it, and it seems at least some users agree.
The tip has since been shared on the MacRumors forums, where another Duo owner reports it working for them. That said, grip styles vary, so it's not going to work for everyone, but intrigued users can test the tip themselves by registering additional bits of digits via Settings ➝ Touch ID & Passcode. After all, more recognized finger flesh is generally better to accommodate the device's various orientations.
Verizon has apologized to customers who pre-ordered the iPhone Duo through the carrier but have since been informed that their delivery is delayed.
In an email sent to affected customers, Verizon said an "unexpected shipping delay" means that iPhone Duo deliveries to some customers will "take a little longer." To make up for the inconvenience, Verizon is offering affected customers a $100 Verizon gift card that can be used online or in-store toward bill payments or merchandise.
"We owe you an apology," said Verizon. "We appreciate your patience and the opportunity to make this right," the company added.
Verizon said customers will receive an email about the $100 gift card next week, and it assured that it is working to fulfill orders as soon as it can.
"Your order is secure, your place in line hasn't changed, and our team is actively tracking your shipment to get it to you as quickly as possible," said Verizon.
MacRumors reader Ryan showed us that he pre-ordered an iPhone Duo from Verizon when pre-orders began on Friday, October 16. Verizon initially quoted him a Friday, October 23 delivery date, meaning he would have received the device on its launch day, but his estimated delivery date has since been revised to Saturday, November 7.
There are many similar examples of Verizon customers with delayed pre-orders across the MacRumors Forums, Reddit, and other social media platforms, with many revised delivery dates now falling in the October 31 to November 14 window.
Some customers who pre-ordered an iPhone Duo through Verizon did receive the device on October 23, so not everyone is impacted.
Leading up to the iPhone Duo launch, there were a few reports mentioning that there would be supply constraints due to alleged manufacturing challenges. In any case, getting the device early is proving to be a challenge for some.
In the meantime, Verizon said affected customers can check their iPhone Duo order status on the My Orders page via the My Verizon website or app.
iPhone Duo uses a Touch ID sensor built into the side button for authentication. Some may feel this is a step backwards after almost a decade of Face ID on iPhones, but if you wear an Apple Watch, you can use it to unlock your iPhone Duo instead. This way, you don't need to touch the side button at all. It's the closest thing we have to a seamless Face ID experience on iPhone Duo (at least for now).
The feature is called Unlock with Apple Watch. It's not new to iPhone, but it works reliably. Note that your Apple Watch needs to be a Series 9 or later, an Ultra 2 or later, or an SE 3. Here's how to turn on the feature and start using it.
Turn On Unlock With Apple Watch
Open the Settings app on your iPhone Duo.
Tap Touch ID & Passcode, then enter your passcode.
Scroll down to "Unlock with Nearby Devices."
Toggle on the switch next to your Apple Watch. If you have more than one watch paired with your iPhone Duo, toggle it on for each one.
Unlock iPhone Duo With Your Watch
Make sure your Apple Watch is on your wrist and unlocked, and close to your iPhone Duo.
Wake iPhone Duo by raising it or tapping the screen. (If it's closed, opening it also wakes it.)
Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to dismiss the Lock Screen.
From here on, your Apple Watch will handle the authentication – no fingerprint shenanigans required. The swipe up is still needed to get past the Lock Screen, but you can turn off this additional step in Settings.
Apple's iPhone Duo has failed JerryRigEverything's latest durability test. Despite its IP68 dust-resistance rating, dust entered the hinge through several ingress points, overwhelming the magnets that hold the phone shut. The bend test then left a permanent green line across the inner display, before the screen became unresponsive.
The outer screen with Ceramic Shield 2 scratched at level 7 on the Mohs scale, but the inner screen only managed level 2, although credit was given for its matte nano-texture coating making marks "magically disappear." Alas, it wasn't enough to earn a pass. "I've been testing these folding phones since the first generation seven years ago – most do survive," said Nelson. "The iPhone Duo did not." Watch his full video here.
Because of the iPhone Duo's foldable design, you tend to switch the orientation of the device more often than you would a regular iPhone. This makes the volume buttons shift positions a lot relative to your fingers, which can cause you to press volume up when you meant to press down, or vice versa.
To prevent this, the iPhone Duo has an option in Settings which can dynamically remap the buttons as you rotate the device, so that the button on the top or right always turns the volume up, while the one on the bottom or left always turns it down.
The system setting works by disabling the mechanism that keeps the volume controls in a fixed position whichever way you hold the phone. The following steps show you how it's done.
Open the Settings app.
Tap Sounds & Haptics.
Turn off Fixed Position Volume Controls.
With the switch off, the volume buttons automatically adjust as you rotate your iPhone Duo, so volume up is always the button on the top or right, whichever way you're holding it. Turn the switch back on if you'd rather each button kept the same function in every orientation.
The only thing to note is that if Orientation Lock is on, then the volume button configuration will follow the orientation that your iPhone Duo is locked to, rather than the way you're holding it.
Apple's documentation suggests dynamic volume buttons is the default behavior, but this hasn't been the case on the few units we've tested so far.
The first iPhone Duo teardown videos have been shared by YouTube channels REWA Technology and Phone Repair Guru, providing us with a look inside the device.
iPhone Duo has two battery cells that can be removed with electrically-activated adhesive. There is a larger battery with a 2,962 mAh (11.56 Wh) capacity and a smaller one that is rated at 1,921 mAh (7.5 Wh). Total battery capacity is 4,883 mAh.
REWA Technology's video includes a labeled breakdown of the logic board, which contains Apple's A20 Pro chip, C2 cellular modem, and more.
Phone Repair Guru revealed that the iPhone Duo's Touch ID button can technically be removed for repairs, but they said it is a difficult process. They also said that the device apparently has a completely modular USB-C charging port.
The repair website iFixit will likely publish a more comprehensive iPhone Duo teardown with detailed analysis in the coming days, so stay tuned for that.

Apple Announcing New Products Next Week: 'Pro and Tell'
The event tagline and animated logo are suggestive of the long-rumored touchscreen MacBook that looks like it will be appearing as part of the MacBook Pro family rather than as a separate "MacBook Ultra." We're also expecting an iPad mini 8 with an OLED display, as well as updated iMac and low-end 14-inch MacBook Pro models featuring the M6 chip. Be sure to check out our overview of launch expectations for more details.
The situation marked a return to long lines at many Apple retail stores, a phenomenon that had largely disappeared in recent years as Apple emphasized offering online orders with pickup appointments rather than first come, first served walk-in sales.
A few lucky customers were able to score walk-in purchases of the iPhone Duo, and Apple appears to be reviving online ordering for in-store pickup that was quickly removed under the crush of pre-order day.
Here's What Apple's Apps Look Like on the iPhone Duo
Early media reviews also gave us a bit better look at the situation, with many noting that third-party apps may not look great until developers get them updated, as by default they continue to show in a traditional iPhone aspect ratio and layout surrounded by black bars.
Verizon Will Charge $10 a Month for iPhone Handoff
With iOS 27, Apple introduced a new feature called iPhone Handoff that lets you quickly swap back-and-forth between two phones with one phone number. The feature seems particularly convenient for the iPhone Duo launch, with some users perhaps wanting to carry different iPhone form factors at different times depending on their needs.
The beta period was used to test a revamped Health app, but that has been removed for the public release as Apple will continue testing it before rolling it out to everyone later this year. Other feature additions include a new icon and theme for Apple Music alongside a just-announced rebrand, user profiles in the Apple TV app, and an expansion of Siri AI support to new languages.
Apple Planning 'HomeView Max' With 9-Inch, 360-Degree Screen
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, this "HomeView Max" will include a 9-inch display (up from 7 inches in the standard HomeView) and include a robotic arm that will allow the display to swivel a full 360º to maintain visibility of the screen and keep subjects in view during video calls as they move around a room.

The option to reserve an iPhone Duo for Apple Store pickup resumed in the U.S. and Canada between 5:10 a.m. and 5:15 a.m. Pacific Time today, but inventory is extremely limited, with most stores having no pickup slots available today.
To search for iPhone Duo availability at your local Apple Stores: head to the iPhone Duo order page, select your desired color and storage and so forth, proceed to the checkout screen, and look for the pick up in-store option. Next, enter your ZIP code and you will be able to see if any models are available for pickup with a reserved time slot.
Apple Store pickup was offered for just a few minutes after iPhone Duo pre-orders began on Friday, October 16, and the option then disappeared until now.
The pickup system has also resumed in Australia, the U.K., Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Singapore, Japan, China, and some other countries.
Just hours after iPhone Duo pre-orders began last week, Apple said demand for the device was "nothing short of extraordinary," with delivery estimates pushing into late January, so it is not surprising that Apple Store pickup slots are hard to come by right now. Apple said it is working to satisfy demand "as quickly as possible."
Given the scarcity, long queues formed at many Apple Stores around the world on Friday, with some lucky customers managing to secure an iPhone Duo on a walk-in basis. If you are still looking for an iPhone Duo, check Apple's pickup tool often.
Seven Apple stores across France are closed on today, as the country prepares for another round of demonstrations a week after looters targeted two of the company's locations.
The closures are likely a precaution to protect employees and stores during the protests. The seven locations have entrances directly onto the street, while Apple's stores inside shopping malls are expected to operate normally during the period.
Apple's Lille and Bordeaux stores were looted during the unrest on October 17 unrest. Both were among many businesses targeted across France.
The demonstrations concern rising living costs and poor conditions in schools, according to the Associated Press. Hundreds of thousands are said to have protested peacefully on October 17, but violence and looting broke out in several cities.
Following the looting, reports emerged of stolen iPhones displaying warnings that they had been disabled and were being tracked, along with instructions to return them to their stores of origin. A video shared by Le Signal purportedly shows the message.
The three Paris stores, Bordeaux Sainte-Catherine, and Aix-en-Provence list Sunday opening hours of noon to 6 p.m. Apple's Lille and Strasbourg pages show that those stores will remain closed on Sunday and reopen on Monday.
