iPhone Duo Has a Hidden Display Setting for Case Compatibility

Apple's new iPhone Duo has a special option in its display settings that adds a narrow black border to the left side of the front screen.

Blogger Nicolas Lellouche discovered the setting in the Display & Brightness menu during his hands-on time with the device shortly after Apple's iPhone event stream last week.

The idea behind the "Shift Left Edge" setting – which roughly doubles the width of the black border – is to accommodate cases that slightly cover that edge of the iPhone Duo's display while making the iOS back swipe gesture work as expected.

Apple offers two official cases for its new foldable: an iPhone Duo Case and a Folio with Kickstand.

It's unclear if either of these cases covers the left edge of the display, but it seems unlikely that Apple would design them to do so. What's more likely is that Apple is trying to accommodate bulky protective third-party cases that tend to cover the left edge.

We'll know for sure when the first reviews of the iPhone Duo hit the web. Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo go live October 16, with availability starting October 23.

We criticize Apple for many things, and most of the times rightfully so. However... if there's a company that keeps paying attention to the details, that's also Apple. Sure, they could pay the same attention to macOS interface consistency (and it looks like this year they are trying) but still, they pay attention to small things that other companies simply wouldn't.

What about the accessibility setting to set the dock to the left side? I can't imagine that they overlooked that.

I was wondering how cases were going to work on the Duo. Covering the outside screen seems to make it harder to use. After all, cases don’t usually cover iPhone screens.
That’s exactly what cases do. A suitcase, briefcase or glasses case doesn’t have one side missing. It’s only in certain industries that “case” has been hijacked to mean what is really a bumper or cover. Terminology matters: taking a perfectly useful word and using it to mean something different just makes language less useful.

I realise this may be a small hill to die on, but I’m prepared to make the sacrifice. The stand must be made somewhere.
