New Vision Pro Headset: Apple Considering Four Different Concepts

Apple is working on a "completely revamped" Vision Pro headset that could go in any of four directions and likely won't arrive before late 2028 or early 2029, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Vision Pro M5 Announcement
Writing in his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman said Apple's Vision team is exploring four concepts for the device, codenamed N224, including designs that offload internal components in a similar way to Meta's latest VR Glasses, which are expected to launch next spring.

An external computing module on Meta's device houses the battery and main processor, and can be clipped to the user's waist. Gurman, who has previewed Meta's headset, says the module is about the same size and weight as the current Vision Pro's battery pack, but with a grippy exterior.

Gurman reports that regardless of the Vision team's work, senior Apple decision-makers still consider the external puck concept as a "poor user experience" and want the company to stick with "something closer to an all-in-one design."

If any of this sounds familiar, that's because Gurman reported in June that Apple was still working on a cheaper, lighter successor to its Vision Pro headset. (The device-in-development is distinct from the long-rumored "Vision Air," which was cancelled last year.)

Apple knows it needs to come up with ways to simplify the design and make something cheaper and lighter, and it is said to be actively exploring ways to reduce the headset's weight by experimenting with plastic, titanium, other metals and various materials.

Still, Gurman has been told the work is on "life support" as the company focuses more on smart glasses, which it aims to release in late 2027. Despite the Vision Pro's most senior leaders "pressing their bosses to keep the category alive, funded and growing at Apple," Gurman says there's still no guarantee a new headset will ever launch.

I have a fifth concept: how about Apple takes a little less than its 40% margin?

I still think it's a good idea but it's way too heavy. Apple's obsession with metal chassis is to blame here.

Get rid of the glass in front, get rid of metal enclosure. Make it the world's lightest VR headset.

The first headset felt like it was design by committee instead of actually what users would want. For example, I think someone high up in the executive team said we must to use metal because it's Apple's brand.

When I first saw the presentation, I wanted one. I saw the potential. Then I tried one in the store and I wondered if any of the Apple executives ever put one on their face before releasing. There is no way they thought the weight wasn't a massive issue if they did.

2029 may be a little aggressive for a consumer product, but not impossible. AVP is a great concept, but one that feels like it should still be in the lab. Tim Cook overruled the team who warned the headset was half-baked with its size, weight, limited FOV, refresh and processing ability.

I use my Vision Pro occasionally still and I will say that I fully agree about the desire for an all-in-one design. This is the way to go even if they need more time to get it right.

On the flip side, I disagree with virtually everyone who thinks it should be made of plastic for a variety of different reasons (for a dedicated “cheaper” version, fine). I also completely disagree about removing the external OLED EyeSight display as it would be even weirder without it (make it better and after some time, if it still doesn’t work well, then it can be removed).

I do believe, personally, that the Vision Pros weight is its biggest flaw right now and that it’s even more-so a problem over price. The device puts so much pressure right on your face and frequently feels like someone is sitting on it. Even if the current Vision Pro was accessible to vastly more people, I fear that it would be hated due to this. Number one customer complaint, including my own, since launch.

Other than that, it’s great. Could be better, but I do really enjoy it.

Make a non-expensive version, where you simply attach your iphone as the computing unit via cable.

When I see AVP, I always think Alien vs Predator the movie :)
