PSA: Apple Mail on Mac May Stop Syncing Microsoft 365 Accounts Today

Microsoft today began disabling Exchange Web Services (EWS) by default in Exchange Online, which will cut off the protocol that Apple's Mail and Calendar apps on Mac still rely on to sync Microsoft 365 work accounts.

General macOS Mail Feature
The cutoff has been on the cards for a fairly long time, as Microsoft stopped adding new features to EWS back in 2018, while in 2023 it announced that it would start disabling the protocol in Exchange Online from October 2026.

As Microsoft explains in the blog post linked above, organizations that have chosen to keep EWS running aren't affected for now. As for everyone else, the cutoff may not happen all at once. In a recently updated post from June, Microsoft described the change as a "phased rollout," so some Mac users could lose access sooner than others.

It's still possible for IT administrators to restore access. However, Microsoft plans to shut down EWS in Exchange Online permanently on April 1, 2027, and no extensions are currently planned.

As you'd expect, Apple is aware of the situation. In an Apple Platform Deployment support document, the company says it is "actively working with Microsoft" to move Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, and Reminders apps on Mac to the newer Microsoft Graph API in a future macOS 27 update.

Except, that update hasn't arrived yet. Apple skipped macOS 27.1 betas entirely, while release notes for the macOS 27.2 betas have yet to make any mention of Graph support.

Meanwhile, affected organizations can just keep EWS running or move Mac users to a Graph-compatible client, such as Microsoft's Outlook app.

Note that the change will only affect Microsoft's cloud-hosted email server. In other words, companies that run their own Exchange servers aren't affected. Neither will iPhone and iPad be impacted, since they use Exchange ActiveSync rather than EWS.

(Thanks, Jonathan!)

So I'm NOT a fan of Outlook (especially for the iPhone) because it just doesn't act like normal mail apps. OR like normal apps. We all swipe to delete things, correct? If you swipe a message in Outlook, it archives it, not deletes it. It doesn't give you the trash can. It sort of looks like a file box. To delete a message, you have to hard push, and then find the TINY trash can in the dialog at the bottom. It's like MS went out of its way to make it so different from our pre-trained muscle memory on how to do things. Let's hope they figure out the EWS issue and get iOS and MacOS 27.xxx to work properly and people don't lose their messages for awhile, or you'll see a serious revolt...again.
you have to change your swipe option to delete in the setting app.

Only Microsoft could announce a cutoff 8 years ago and fail to ensure its partner is not ready and then fail to offer clarity as to when apple will be adding native graph support.
Apple has known for 8 years. Seems like (but I'm not privy to what's been discussed between them) in all that time, Apple could rewrite their mail app to use Graph API. So here we are at the day of reckoning and Apple isn't ready. You're being very generous to Apple, excusing them for sitting on their hands for 8 years.

Did I miss the notice from Apple about this and that millions of users email will stop working if you're using their Mail app on macOS?

Thankfully, admins can re-enable EWS until April 2027 or people can switch to Modern Outlook (YUK!), so it's not shutting down business today.

Only Apple would take longer than 8 years to implement the new API into its Mail program.

I’m curious about why Mail works differently on Mac and on iOS/iPadOS. After so many years of converging APIs and technologies, I thought both Mail clients worked in the same way under the hood…
ActiveSync was explicitly for mobile devices per MS licensing.

Equally with this change, no more legacy for Outlook - you have to use new Outlook which is an absolute pile of garbage.

I swipe to delete in the Outlook app all the time, you just have to set that up in settings.
