Cheaper, Lighter Apple Vision Pro Successor Could Arrive in Late 2028

I don't know why some people here are so desperate for this product to die. I think it's great with massive potential. The main problem that stopped people trying it out was the price. I never wore one, but apparently the weight was also a big problem, and the battery life. If they can fix those things, which sounds like they are trying to, the second version may actually sell well.

IMO That product category should exist and have a place in life, it enriches them by connecting people from distance, the killer feature is FaceTime and shareable experiences like watching movie together, otherwise it's pretty lonely in there.

Apple need to double down on the things it does well which is a offering a giant private work space. If they stripped out all the AR/VR shenanigans and killed its app store in the process they wouldn't need half its internal tech. A single USB-C cable running out the back to connect to a laptop, iPad or iPhone would be all thats needed.

I and millions of other people do not have space at home for an office or a desk. A monitor is out of the question and a projector takes up space. If I could throw on a pair of glasses that gave me multuple windows on a large HUD I'd buy it tomorrow.

From my perspective ... exactly this and I do have space at home for an office, desk and 32" monitor.

I've been following the 'big display glasses' market quite closely for about the last year because I want the ability to take my 32" monitor with me in my hand luggage, or even better in my pocket when I am traveling because I find that I can't really be fully productive (mostly spreadsheet work with a bit of coding) on a 14" or even a 16" laptop screen. My monitor is obviously too big and heavy to fit in hand luggage let alone a pocket so what I want in reality is glasses/goggles that are that portable and can give a good enough illusion of sitting in front of the real 32" monitor on my desk when I'm travelling.

Although I haven't tried all of the options from the likes of Real, Viture, Ray Neo etc I'm pretty sure from my research and my experiments with a Meta Quest 3 that none of the top-of-the-range models out there right now will be good enough to satisfy me....

- The 50-something degree field of view (FoV) from the best of the current generation of 'big display glasses' is too small to keep the whole virtual monitor in view with even the slightest head movement

- Even at that limited field of view the current resolutions aren't high enough to give sharp enough text and increasing the FoV without increasing the resolution would make that situation even worse, and

- To give a convincing "I'm working at my desk" illusion solid 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF) anchoring is needed (maybe I could get away with 3Dof but 6Dof would definitely be better) and not many options have really solid 6DoF at the moment.

I have come to the conclusion that right now the only option likely to meet my quality criteria is the Apple Vision Pro (AVP) but (a) it's expensive and (b) while it is somewhat portable it would take up a big percentage of my hand luggage space and certainly wouldn't fit in a pocket so I am one potential customer who is definitely hoping that this rumour is true and maybe goes even further than lighter and cheaper AVP-like Goggles but might also have Apple competing in that world of 'big display glasses' and coming out with something in the sort of form factor that XReal/Viture/etc are producing but with AVP specifications in terms of FoV, resolution and 6DoF capabilities. To do that such a product would almost certainly need either a puck or be powered from a USB cable plugged into the user's phone/laptop/tablet but I'm OK with that compromise.

Such a device would be a day one purchase for me even if the price was still around the $2,000 mark (or in my case more likely £2,000 - I'm in the UK) because getting AVP levels of capability in a device that really could fit in my pocket would be so useful for travelling. Right now I sometimes end up buying a basic 27" QHD monitor in locations where I'll be for more than a few days (they are surprisingly cheap especially second hand) and then either selling it or donating it to charity when I leave so I could justify even quite a high price for the convenience and I'd almost certainly get some additional utility from watching movies & TV shows on flights even if I never got into other VR stuff like gaming, experiences etc.
