Apple Stores Said to Lose Video Walls, Regain Dedicated Genius Bars

Apple is working on a sweeping retail overhaul that would bring back dedicated Genius Bars to its stores, carve out new spaces for order pickup and Today at Apple classes, and do away with oversized video walls, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Apple Store Genius Bar Pickup
In this week's "Power On" newsletter, Gurman said that Apple intends to speed up store renovations over the coming years. Apple plans to rework the "Avenue," its term for the side sections of a store where accessories and services are displayed, reinstate standalone Genius Bars, and remove the large video screens installed in many locations.

Pickup and Today at Apple, which typically share a counter and a seating area today, will each get their own compact section along the Avenue, described internally as a "bay" and measuring about 10 feet across.

For pickup, Gurman described plans for an all-wood bay with a faint Apple logo worked into the upper section, with lockable drawers underneath for holding customer orders, fronted by a counter where staff can hand items over. The Today at Apple bay will feature a similar look, topped by a display similar to a large television, with drawers below for stashing iPads, laptops, and other class equipment, plus a fixed instructor table and stools nearby.

The video walls being phased out trace back to the retail vision pursued under former retail chief Angela Ahrendts, who treated Apple stores as public gathering places rather than purely transactional spaces. Gurman frames the current shift as a move away from that toward stores built primarily around service, fulfillment, and everyday shopping needs.

Where those screens come down, most stores will gain a wood finished Genius Bar built to echo the design Apple used before it introduced the open plan "Genius Grove." It includes counters set at two different heights for accessibility, backed by a wall of storage drawers and large product imagery. Gurman added that both the new bars and the Avenue bays are meant to look as though they always belonged in the store, rather than as visible retrofits, and that many renovated locations will also see their break rooms and other back-of-house areas refurbished.

Elements of the redesign are already live in a small number of stores around the world. Gurman expects the fuller version of the proposed store overhaul to reach most newly opened and renovated stores gradually, with the international rollout continuing over several years.

Separately, Gurman reports that Apple has tightened expectations for staff during pre-opening meetings, with employees to be more firmly required to stay on their feet, put away phones and drinks, and remain attentive. Once doors open to customers, timed for five minutes ahead of the posted hour, every staff member on site is expected to applaud as the first shoppers walk in.

How about a designated checkout area with a place to queue?
Always standing somewhere waiting for someone to have time to take my money.

Standing around in a crowd feeling like nobody knew what was going on wasn’t a positive experience.

i miss the genius bars. i mean i don't exactly like having to go to a store for help but it was so much better than the mess it is today if you need help with something.

but can we stop the cringe applause when people walk into a store? it's just a retail shop. yey thanks for giving us your money and praising/remaining loyal to the multi trillion dollar company.

I hate the current design of "you can stand anywhere and wait", and customers are just sitting around at random tables while they wait for the Genius to help them. We need the Genius Bar back for sure.

I've been working with Apple technologies in some capacity for over 30 years: I was part of the cadre of folks in the original hardware servicing program before Jobs killed it, was there for the transition from OS9 to OS X, did system administration on an Xserve for a national organization, and supported dozens of workers using every variety of laptop and desktop system. Which is to say, if I'm showing up in person at an Apple Store looking for a solution, I've got a real problem. It has been insulting making appointments, and having literal teenagers guess around issues, hand things off to each other and waste my time when I have had to go as far as telling them how to use their own diagnostic systems.

On the other end of the spectrum, my mom is 90 years old, and I can't be there to help her with every technology issue she has because we live on opposite sides of the country. When she shows up at an Apple Store, instead of getting someone whose job it is to parse out her own misunderstanding from a legitimate problem, she gets a clerk frequently motivated by upselling her on something she doesn't actually need. Again, it's insulting.

So, if the return of the Genius Bar means actual customer service, staffed by people who aren't doing dual roles as sales clerks who happen to have a bunch of prepackaged scripts to "help," then I welcome it.

My experience in Apple Stores has been nothing short of chaos on almost every visit. No logical order to anything. Typically I walk in and it’s crowded and I have to hunt down someone wearing the color of the day, only to have them send me somewhere else. Or I wait patiently behind a customer already talking to a staff member hoping to get their attention, but then they’re off running to show iPhone cases. Or I come in with my barcode ready for a genius appointment but instead of scanning it they ask for my name and look it up manually. Then there was the Vision Pro debacle of 2026 whereby I needed a battery replacement but because I have two Vision Pros they entered the wrong serial number and sent me to a different Apple Store across LA County and they refused the battery swap because I had to have the headset with me so I could turn off Find My. For a battery? And I could not turn off Find My remotely because that Vision Pro had not yet been updated to version 2 and was idle for several months, during which time my Apple ID had changed. So a third trip back and a new work order with the correct Vision Pro on it and the device in hand got me to the point where I now had to update the device in the store and then turn off Find My, but because version didn’t have support for a trackpad, I was left sitting there trying to navigate and type account names and passwords into thin air for a half hour. I did get that battery, but only because I was determined.
