Old 'Popcorn Time' App Left Hundreds of Thousands of Macs at Risk

If you installed Popcorn Time on a Mac years ago, part of the app may still be running, and it may have left your Mac open to attack.

Security firm Eye Research has detailed how Time4Popcorn – an unofficial version of the once-popular movie streaming app – left behind a small update checker that scanned for updates every time the Mac started, even for people who hadn't opened the app in years. The checker basically trusted whatever it downloaded, and gave it full permission to change anything on the Mac.

What's worse is that Time4Popcorn's developers long abandoned the project, so the website addresses the helper contacted were expiring. That meant anyone who took over one of the addresses could use it to install harmful software on affected machines. Fortunately, Eye Research says it found no evidence that criminals had done so.

Eye Research said it took control of an abandoned address used by the update checker, and it estimates that 250,000 to 350,000 Macs were affected. With no developer left to issue a fix, the researchers had to use the checker itself to disable it on more than a million Macs and Windows PCs. It then handed the addresses to the Shadowserver Foundation, a nonprofit cybersecurity group.

Even so, this fix doesn't address other vulnerabilities in Time4Popcorn, and some updated addresses remain outside the researchers' control. For that reason, if you're still running that version, the researchers' advice is simple: uninstall it. Time4Popcorn was one of several unofficial versions of Popcorn Time, and it was actually distributed under the Popcorn Time name, so users may not know whether the copy they installed is the affected one. For all the details, check out the Eye Research report.

While the new iPad mini has an OLED display, the device does not support ProMotion, meaning the display's refresh rate is limited to 60Hz instead of 120Hz. ProMotion support would have allowed for the iPad mini's refresh rate to automatically adjust from 10Hz to 120Hz depending on the content being displayed, but evidently Apple has kept the feature exclusive to the iPad Pro among iPad...

It was an illegal pirateware app.
The app is technically legal.
It mostly lets you watch torrent videos downloading them in sequential order, so that you can start watching as it downloads instead of waiting for it to be completed. Most torrent clients do that now.
Of course, like all torrent clients, what movie you watch is on you. Full of great old public domain movies out there by the way.

Apple should update its app publishing guidelines prohibiting apps that run update checkers on background processes, etc. from being made available in the App Store, this will of course force apps like this and others, like MS Office, from implementing such anti-consumer approaches (MS has never given two thoughts to user-centric friendly design).

An app should only check for updates when opened, avoiding an ever running background process permanently consuming resources for an app you use once or twice a year, if ever.

Do you think this app was on the Mac App Store? What would this do?

I don't understand why you need an app when you can just stream on the web. I used to use Popcorn time
🤔

You used to use Popcorn Time, but you don't understand why someone would need an app like Popcorn Time?

Is this post for real?

No, and yes, macOS is an open platform and should remain one, but if implemented at the guidelines or App Store level, it sends a message to developers about what's expected of them, not that they all would comply necessarily.

Microsoft does offer Office on the App Store, so they would have to change their ways, for one.

Apple could also implement a permission system like they do for camera, photos or location access, asking permission for background processes / login items from apps, detailing what they do. This would then apply to every app regardless of origin.

Edit: my point here being, there's no reason to implement background processes and checkers for updating apps, this is bad design. If you don't open or use an app, you don't need for it to be bugging you for updates nor be using background resources, just check if opened.
The printer manufacturers are the worst. But I guess because the printer is “always running” they feel like they should make sure that constant checking for the newest version of HP or Canon or Epson bloatware apps nobody uses is justified.
