iPhone Users in San Francisco Bay Area Receive Earthquake Notification

iPhone users in the San Francisco Bay Area have received an "Earthquake Detected Nearby" notification today following a preliminary 5.6-magnitude earthquake near Redwood Valley, California, which is around 100 miles north of San Francisco. The earthquake was detected at approximately 8:10 a.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday.

"If shaking intensifies: Drop, cover, hold on," reads the notification, issued by the United States Geological Survey (USGS)'s ShakeAlert system.

On at least some iOS versions, an embedded Apple Maps view shows an area of possible shaking.
