Apple Reportedly Planned to Replace 5,000 Support Employees With AI

Apple recently considered laying off about 5,000 support employees, but it has put those plans on hold indefinitely, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Apple Support App General Feature
The report said that Apple believed that AI-powered phone and web agents could take over some of the responsibilities performed by the employees who would have been let go, but Apple is no longer "currently looking to take such a step."

Last month, we reported that customers who call the AppleCare phone number (1-800-APL-CARE) from the U.S. or Canada are now routed to an AI-powered support assistant. While many of Apple's phone systems already had a basic automated operator, the Apple Support phone line is now using a bot powered by generative AI.

The virtual assistant can answer questions and provide step-by-step instructions for troubleshooting issues with your Apple products. It can still transfer you to a human advisor if it cannot answer a specific question, or if you ask to speak to a real person.

It remains to be seen if Apple eventually revisits layoffs and/or reduces hiring for AppleCare roles.

The report said Apple has laid off some other employees in middle management roles in recent weeks, including roughly half a dozen directors.

Given the rapidly growing backlash to AI, data centres, tech billionaires and the current state of the economy, I think that's a good call.

So… the company that is widely known for having one of the best customers support, will intentionally try to ******ify it? Very smart move.

welp, it was a good run for apple and support and the gold standard which is not as gold now as it was is not just above shoe leather with this change. I suppose it is time to say it, this may be the end of my apple road as these devices age out I need to look elsewhere why pay a premium just to get the same low quality support and service

I haven't had the need to call Apple Support in years, but did yesterday because my daughter's iPhone replacement hasn't shipped. While the AI system was a lot more friendly than the old-fashioned "Push 2 for iPhone, push 3 for ..." system, it quickly became frustrating when I couldn't steer it toward a proper department. To its credit, the very moment I said "speak to a person" I was connected to a real human being, who addressed my concern in about 3 minutes.

Keep the humans, please.

Terrible Idea… every AI support agent I have used ended in starting all over with a real person and just wastes time and makes things more frustrating for the customer… An auto attendant is one thing but support nope..
