Apple Reallocates iPhone XR Orders Among Suppliers Following Production Issues

by

Apple is reportedly shifting around iPhone XR orders amongst its manufacturing partners to ensure production issues don't cause supply constraints when the smartphone officially launches late next month.

According to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report, Pegatron has lost up to half of its original iPhone XR orders to Foxconn, following delayed shipments of some key components and a shortage of workers at its plants in China.

Apple had originally divvied up between 50 and 60 percent of total orders for the lower-cost LCD iPhone to Foxconn, with Pegatron taking about 30 percent of orders. However, Apple has recently lowered the portion of iPhone XR orders allocated to Pegatron to below 30 percent, while ramping up those to Foxconn substantially.

On top of that, the supply of LCD panels from Japan Display (JDI) for the production of the iPhone XR has not been steady, according to the report. Pegatron and Foxconn declined to comment.

Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty cautioned in July that Apple's 6.1-inch LCD iPhone would not launch until October because of issues with backlight leakage, although it's not clear whether the latest LCD supply constraints are down to the same problem.

The iPhone XR starts at $749 in the United States. The October launch means Apple will likely lose a few sales to customers this month who are interested in a new iPhone but don't want to pay several hundred dollars more for the iPhone XS and XS Max, which start at $999 and $1,099, respectively. Because of this, Huberty saw Apple delivering a "slightly weaker-than-consensus September quarter."

Global shipments of Apple's new iPhone lineup are expected to exceed 85 million units in the second half of the year, with the more budget-friendly iPhone XR expected to account for over half of all sales.

Apple's lower-spec iPhone XR features an edge-to-edge "Liquid Retina" LCD display with wide color and True Tone support, and the same all-screen design as the OLED-based iPhone Xs and Xs Max, but with an aluminum frame instead of stainless steel.

Other downgrades from the iPhone XS that make the XR cheaper include a single-lens rear facing camera instead of the dual lens on the XS, and a lack of 3D Touch support.

The lower-priced iPhone XR becomes available to order on Friday, October 19, with orders shipping the following Friday, October 26.

Unbox Therapy: the iPhone XR is depressing - same PPI as the iPhone 4

No you're right.... Nowhere near comparable to a 3 year old phone. In fact the S4 had a higher resolution. After all the brand new XR is the same PPI as the iPhone 4, an LCD not OLED, and far lower resolution than even the S7 Edge [emoji6]

You can't even watch 1080p YouTube on it!
Actually you are incorrect. He has claimed in that video the iPhone xr has the same resolution as the iPhone 4. Which is categorically false and misleading.

You realize in the video he has confused ppi and resolution and is using them interchangeably...right?

That’s not accurate because ppi and resolution are two separate metrics and cannot be used interchangeably.

The xr also has the same ppi as the iPhone 6/6s/7/8 and has a higher ppi then the pads even though the iPads have much higher resolutions compared to the xr,8,7,6s,6,4s and even your s7.
The iPads have lower ppi but higher resolution... your argument kind of falls apart here.

Your completely right the xr isn’t comparable to your s7;
having a 7nm soc with an 8core npu
nvme storage
3D facial biometrics
edge to edge display without a forehead and chin
record 4K videos

It not only surpasses your s7 but crushes the s9 and note 9 as well in hardware and price.

But you keep focusing on only one metric of the display, resolution.

No one else will, enjoy your device.

Ps: your wrong about that as well, xr can play 1080p video on YouTube, don’t take my word for it, you can ask anyone with an iPhone 6/6s/7/8.

Yep, those displays are hard to acquire for Apple.
No one is making 720 displays anymore.
But it falls right in line with the "show an artificial demand" school of Apple.

The exclusion of 3D Touch baffles me. I mean all the cheaper iPhones (7 and 8) have it, so it is weird that this new model lacks it. Hope to see a tear down onepce it is released so we can see if the exclusion is warranted or not.

Having said that, if the trade off is less battery (like the 6S), I rather have it gone then.
Even if I lost a bit of battery I’d be happier if it included 3D Touch.

The XR is in an odd place… Cheaper than the XS, but bigger? It would make much more sense fitting in if this was a smaller device than the XS that replaced the SE.

I'm discussing screen resolution.
Yes, as i repeatedly pointed out that’s all your doing, comparing one metric, resolution. You clearly do not understand the difference between ppi and screen resolution or how it’s used.

According to you the iPad with a lower ppi is terrible in 2018. That simply isn’t true.

not the amazing A12 chip that people are having issues with stuttering video playback with or poor LTE cellular and WiFi reception on the crappy Intel modems. .
Yes, again you seem to be reiterating my point.
Your only discussing one metric of the device, cherry picking if you will, and discounting the rest as a whole, prove whatever point you are trying and failing to make. Which your clearly not making at this point.

I have the device and I’m not suffering from stuttering video playback or poor lte cellular or WiFi issue.

In fact I have two iPhone X’s max.

One though is exhibiting the pink shift, but apple is in the process of replacing that one. Amazing customer service.

You can’t call the intel modem crappy just because you want to.

Btw. I need to correct you again, the intel modem has on WiFi reception, that was solved by a reset of network settings, or so I have read here on the forums.

I'm pointing out that you're not watching a full 1080 res video on the XR as there arent PHYSICALLY enough hardware pixels to do it, fact. It's compromised. Like watching 4k on a 1080p screen is a compromise. Watching a 1920x1080 video on a 1792x828 screen is a compromise.
Is that what your pointing out now?

So you can watch 4K content on a 1080 display,
And you can watch 1080p on the xr display.

It’s a bit confusing because you claimed otherwise a few posts up.

And there is no need for it in 2018 other than to drive people to buy the higher end model. Even 300 dollar Android devices have 1920x1080 screens as standard.
Do those 300 dollar devices also offer a 7nm soc with an 8core npu, nvme storage, 3D biometrics and edge to edge display without a forhead and chin?

No, didn’t think so.

But you keep focusing on screen resolution disregarding everything else the phone has to offer.

Were you even interested in the xr?
