Will Apple Ever Merge iPadOS and macOS? John Ternus Responds

Over the years, Apple has repeatedly dismissed the idea of merging iPadOS and macOS into a single operating system. Will that change under John Ternus? On an earnings call yesterday, Apple's new CEO responded to a question about the topic.

MacBook Pro PROLED Touch 1
In short, the answer remains no.

"We don't have any fundamentally different changes that we're planning right now, nor would we talk about it anyway," said Ternus, in response to an analyst asking about the possibility of a unified Apple operating system.

The full question and answer from Six Colors' transcript of the earnings call:

Richard Kramer, Arete Research: Your latest MacBook Pros included more iOS features like Touch and Dynamic Island as well as, obviously, Siri AI. Should we anticipate further close linking of macOS and iOS features, maybe even pointing at some point to a single unified OS, either for simplicity or to reduce costs?

Ternus: Look, we are very proud of both the Mac and the iPad, and I think what you've seen over the years is we've really enjoyed the ability to bring features and capabilities across the ecosystem and create really compelling features that span things between handoff between iPhone and Mac and iPad, and so when we design the product, we're looking at how can we make the best version of each and every product, and if you look at what we just did last week with the MacBook Pro, we took a huge leap forward. These MacBook Pros are better in every way than the ones that came before them, and we're really proud of that, and so we don't have any fundamentally different changes that we're planning right now, nor would we talk about it anyway.

In a 2025 interview about iPadOS and macOS merging, Apple's software engineering chief Craig Federighi said the company does not want to build "sporks."

"It turns out it's not a good spoon and it's not a good fork," he said.

While it appears that iPadOS and macOS will remain separate operating systems, Macs and iPads have more and more feature overlap over time. For example, the new MacBook Pro models with OLED displays have touchscreen functionality.

MacOS is so much better than iPadOS. Give me an iPad with MacOS instead of a Mac with iPadOS.

Productivity at MacOS is great, iPadOS is fun for consumption apps. I tried stuff like Adobe apps and Office apps but it's all horrible on iPadOS.

Apple Unveils Most Advanced No Ever
Mac and iPad to remain courageously distinct until further notice, which Apple will not provide.

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA — Apple today reaffirmed its commitment to bringing Mac and iPad closer together with DuoPay™—two purchases, one seamless justification.

Asked whether increasingly identical features might eventually lead to a unified operating system, Johnny Appleseed delivered a seamless succession of “proud,” “compelling,” and “ecosystem,” demonstrating Apple’s magical industry-leading ability to hand off a question without ever answering it.

“We’re making the mostbest versions of each and every product,” said Appleseed. “The Mac now has more iPad features, and the iPad continues to have carefully selected reasons you still need a Mac.”

Apple described the latest MacBook Pro as “better in every way,” officially concluding the previous model’s tenure as better in every way.

The company also confirmed it has no fundamentally different changes planned, adding that if it did, it would say exactly the same thing.

“Our roadmap has never been clearer,” Appleseed said. “You just can’t see it.”

The unified experience is available today through your credit card statement.

in a 2025 Craig Federighi explained: “We don’t want to build sporks,” “It turns out it’s not a good spoon and it’s not a good fork.”

Instead, Apple will sell customers a $1,599 spoon and a $999 fork, each missing one feature necessary to finish lunch.

“We believe customers deserve the best tool for every task,” added Appleseed. “And we believe every task deserves a separate transaction.”

Both utensils feature USB-C. The plate is sold separately.

There is no reason to not allow customers the option to choose if they want MacOS or iPados on their ipad other than MONEY and control.

I bet they wish they could lockdown MacOS more and push the Mac App Store

Give me a dual-boot iPad.

When docked to a keyboard it runs macOS and is literally a MacBook.

When used as a tablet it runs iPadOS.

Allow fast OS switching to make transitions seamless and allow storage to be partitioned in such a way that each OS has its own storage and there’s also a shared storage that both OSes have access too.

Calling the Dynamic Island and touch an "iOS feature" is like calling speakers on the iPhone a Mac feature.

Either way, glad to hear this directly from John Ternus. They can both excel at what they're best at while sharing some features, without being one platform.
