Phil Schiller Reportedly Wants 'No Part Of' Apple's Plans for App Store
Apple's former marketing chief Phil Schiller reportedly wants "no part of" the company's plans to "squeeze additional recurring revenue" from the App Store.
In his Power On newsletter last weekend, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple's new CEO John Ternus and services chief Eddy Cue want to "figure out ways to raise margins and squeeze additional recurring revenue" from the App Store, but Schiller "seems to believe that such moves will only further irk developers and governments."
"While there was no internal blowup or anything like that, it's something he wanted no part of," Gurman explained.
Schiller is still listed as an "Apple Fellow" on the company's leadership page, but Gurman reported that the longtime executive has stepped down from running the App Store and Apple Events. Gurman said Schiller made this decision to spend more time with family, but he said that Apple's aggressive App Store revenue plans were also a factor.
Schiller first joined Apple in 1987 as a product marketing manager, left in 1993, and ultimately returned in 1997 as part of Steve Jobs' efforts to turn around the company, which was struggling at the time. The report said he is 66 years old.
