Compared to previous sales, this is a match of the all-time low price on the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air. Right now, only Best Buy has this steep discount, and we aren't tracking any notable deals on the 512GB model.

Although there are now updated M3 MacBook Air computers, Apple does still sell the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air as an entry-level option. The model on sale today features an 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, and 8GB RAM, and it should work perfectly for anyone looking for a reliable machine to do basic daily tasks.

$799 is definitely a great starting price for someone looking to get the refreshed design but doesn’t necessarily need the latest M3 chip

Anyone in the market for a MacBook Air now has this as an option or the M1 as an alternative for $649 from Walmart:

Don't buy a laptop with 8gb of RAM in 2024, people. You will regret it.

8GB of RAM. That's just not going to cut it with the AI requirements coming soon, if folks are interested in using that.

Or you can take it as evidence that the base-model Macs can't usefully run the new AI hotness. So they have to go while Apple can still get something for them.
Which if the 8gb of ram rumor is to be believed (which is why only certain iPhones get it), that is bs. But I am sure apple will keep it from running on their base models to upsell just like with the iPhones.
