I just replaced my 2018 12.9 with the 2021 12.9 (the 2018 completely died-not just battery) largely motivated by already having Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil 2 that will continue to work with the 2021, I can’t imagine spending $1000+ for a device that unfortunately doesn’t do anything more than the $329 iPad. Apple is going to have to revamp iPadOS or they will see iPad Pro sales tank. There were high hopes for iPadOS 15-the iPad Pro was already overkill for the OS but the M1 models are simply obscene at this point and they do feel completely held back in so many ways. And I’m a long time user and big proponent of the iPad Pro. For the cost of the 12.9 plus peripherals you can just about get an iPad Air with pencil and MacBook Air.

Absolutely right. What can an iPad Pro do that the $329 can’t?…not enough to justify the price

While a better price (obvi), I'm still not yet able to justify $1k for an iPad.
More specifically, having used iPads over the years, the larger format isn't for me. I always considered the iPad (and tablets in general) a handheld. But at 12.9", that is no longer the case. At that point, I greatly prefer a MBP.

Some people think pro-motion mini LED display justifies the price (partly). What would be nice if similar display technology was offered without M1 8gb at substantially lower price. It's a little like the pricing of pro max iPhones, where to get largest screen, you also pay for features like zoom/macro/lidar you may not need. ?‍♂️

It's not just the OS, but the developers need to step it up also. There is absolutely zero reason why Adobe should not be doubling down and offering more robust versions of Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and even a version of After Effects. The M1 chip can handle it, just get the software up to snuff. I'm sure there are other industries that could be doing the same, not just the creative.
