Google Allo Shutting Down Next Year in Favor of Google's Main Messages App

by

Google this week announced that it is shutting down its messaging app Google Allo [iOS Direct Link], and incorporating many of its features into the Messages app on Android smartphones. Google Allo is an expanded messaging app that lets users send GIFs, text from their desktops, and use Smart Reply.

Now, Google says to continue Messages' momentum it has decided to "stop supporting Allo to focus on Messages." Many of Allo's features have already been integrated into Messages, and Allo will continue to work through March 2019. Until then, users will be able to export all existing conversations from the app. Because Google's main Messages app isn't available on iOS, Allo users on iPhone will have to migrate to an alternative texting platform when the service shutters.

Google Allo first launched in September 2016, pitched as the company's "intelligent messaging app," thanks to the inclusion of Google Assistant. Allo is available on iOS and Android smartphones, and offers many features that are comparable to messaging apps like Apple's iMessage and Facebook's WhatsApp.

<sarcasm> Oh! I'm sooooo surprised to see another product be yanked out from under customer's feet after buying into it while Google hailed as amazing! </sarcasm>

This is one of the reasons I left Android. Do you like your camera? They'll yank out some of your favorite features with no explanation and not tell you when or even *if* they're coming back (timelapse). How about Google Photos? They'll do what they want with your favorite features there also (Chromecasting)! Or perhaps you've invested your time into migrating to one of their feature-rich products to simplify your use? They'll pull the plug, tell you to use something else because "it's amazing" and then end up pulling the plug there also (Inbox, Google Voice, *any* of their text/instant messaging solutions)!

No, thanks. People say that iOS is boring because it never changes, but I'll take that over being yanked around by the company that makes my phone. My trust in Google is almost nonexistent now.

The "new" text messaging format Google recently announced (with the carriers of course) for its surviving messaging application will not be end to end encrypted - so that Google and the carriers (and governments I suppose) can data mine users conversations.

It would be really good if Apple ported iMessage and ApplePay to Android and started bringing some privacy there.

Yet another botched attempt at messaging by Google.

Astounding that they've gone this long and still never gotten it right.
