Price Reality Check

Po are displeased at the pricing of Apple's new iPod product should check this:

SmartDisk FireFly - 5GB Firewire Drive. MRSP is $399.95. The reason for the cost is that it's small. It utilizes Toshiba's 1.8-inch 5gb PC Card HD (retail price $399).

While not confimed to be the same mechanism as Toshiba's... few other drives would fit in that small enclosure. This puts Apple's iPod in a bit more perspective...

Translation: Apple's iPod is an excellent price for it's size. If you don't care about size/style, you can buy the Nomad Digital Jukebox which is 5" x 5" x 1.5" (vol = 37.5 cubic inches) vs the iPod which is 4.02" x 2.43" x .78" (vol = 7.6 cubic inches). Or, get a Maxtor 80gig Firewire Drive for $319 and use that. You'd have to bring your Mac everywhere to play the MP3's, but it's cheaper, damnit! (heavy sarcasm)
