I have traded-in quite a few watches, iPhones, iPad and Mac with Apple, never had a problem ... not disputing the fact that some have had issues, just another data point.

I have traded in two watches, two iPhones and one MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro was a disaster. The company that Apple uses stated the polarizing layer was defective. Dropped my trade from $850 down to $130. The problem was the photograph the company used was showing the reflections of the of the lights in their ceiling. I had photographs of the machine before I packed it showing the screen and pictures of the machine packed. I disputed the claim with Apple and won my claim.
I fully believe this company fakes problems, or steals devices, then pays Apple the minimum amount, then the company sells the devices at the higher value. In my case the company would have made a $620 profit based on their scam.
Since that last incident I have traded in a watch and an iPhone at the physical Apple Store, and provided documentation that the device was in the condition stated and the proper trade-in amount is correct.
It is not Apple doing the scamming, it is the company used for returns, such company not being Apple.
My data point is enough to make me not trust the trade-in process by sending in the device.

4-5 years ago I traded in an iphone X. When I got the trade in quote, they said they received an iphone 8. Fortunately, I had all of my documentation and never owned an iphone 8. The person I was working with at Apple started going down a rabbit hole and found tons of people that it happened too. I've done multiple trade-ins since then, but mistakes do happen.

At this point I don't think it is "mistakes". I think it is intentional on the part of the trade-in company that Apple uses.
