M5 vs. M6 MacBook Pro Buyer's Guide: All Differences Compared

Apple today replaced the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with a new M6 model, bringing more CPU and GPU cores, upgraded wireless connectivity, and more. How much has changed, and is it worth upgrading or choosing the newer model?

The M6 ‌MacBook Pro‌ retains the previous model's design and most of its specifications, concentrating its improvements on processing performance and connectivity. Both models offer 16GB of starting memory, 1TB of starting storage, and up to 24 hours of battery life.

The M5 ‌MacBook Pro‌ originally launched at $1,599 with 512GB of storage. Apple removed that configuration in March, making 1TB standard and increasing the starting price to $1,699. A further price increase in June brought it to $1,999 amid rising memory and storage costs. The M6 replaces that model at the same price.

Here are all of the differences between the entry-level M5 and M6 ‌MacBook Pro‌ models:

Should You Upgrade From the M5 MacBook Pro?

For existing M5 ‌MacBook Pro‌ owners, there is very little reason to upgrade. The M6 is a small refresh aimed primarily at buyers replacing a much older machine, with improvements to performance and connectivity that leave the overall experience essentially unchanged. It offers no increase in memory capacity, additional ports, or longer battery life. If the M5 model already handles your work comfortably, the newer model provides little practical incentive to replace it.

If your current computer can last a little longer, it may also be worth waiting. A redesigned entry-level ‌MacBook Pro‌ with an M7 chip is reportedly planned for as early as the first half of 2027, potentially offering a more substantial upgrade than the M6 refresh.

Should You Buy the M5 or M6 MacBook Pro?

For buyers replacing an Intel-based Mac or an older Apple silicon machine, the M5 and M6 deliver much the same experience. The more consequential improvements come from the hardware they share, so the price and configuration should carry more weight than the chip generation.

At the same price, memory, storage, and condition, choose the M6. Its newer chip and wireless connectivity are welcome additions, but there is little reason to pay substantially more for them. A discounted M5 model is likely to be the better value for many buyers.

Used and refurbished M5 models offer another potential saving: the 512GB configuration that Apple discontinued in March. If you do not need 1TB of internal storage, this version may provide a more affordable route to essentially the same ‌MacBook Pro‌ experience. The M6 starts at 1TB, leaving no equivalent lower-capacity option.

A well-priced M5 with enough memory and storage for your work is still a sensible purchase, while the M6 is the straightforward choice when comparable models cost close to the same amount.

Apple today sent out invites for an experience in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, and the "Pro and tell" tagline on the invitation likely means that the rumored MacBook models with touch-enabled OLED displays will stick with MacBook Pro branding instead of the once-rumored "MacBook Ultra" name. The long-rumored "iPhone Ultra" ended up being named iPhone Duo, so speculation that Apple...

It’s amazing how much of a leap forward the M1 was over Intel and how over-engineered it was. Like you say, still good today, in all it’s variations

I still don't get people who want to buy MacBook Pro with a MacBook Air-level chip. If you are willing to spend money on product which has already undergone a 20%+ price increase within the last few months, might as well spend a little extra on a Pro chip.
I’ve read a couple reasons people go this route. The base M chips are quite performant. Many folks don’t need more. For those that need a little more but not Pro more, the base M MBP offers a couple advantages over the MBA with the same chip. First, the MBP is actively cooled with a fan. During extended workloads or games (10+ minutes) the MBA throttles up to 40%. Most people buying the MBA will never notice this. But for small/medium businesses, certain workloads definitely suffer. You can look at the product/performance ladder: Base M no fan (MBA) -> Base M with one fan (14”MBP) -> M Pro/Max with two fans (14”+16”MBP). Second, the additional ports may be of value to some. Third, some prefer the higher quality ProMotion display (though I think the MBA display is perfectly fine). In the end, there are enough customers that find the base M MBP of sufficient value over the MBA and enough performance not to warrant spending a few hundred more on a Pro MBP when prices are already ridiculous.

M1 max is a fantastic machine that doesn't suffer from the flip-flopping on performance cores from later models.

That bloody thing cost me $3,300... I'm still slightly pissed about that so I'm going to run this thing into the absolute ground

I think it depends on workload. Correct me if I’m wrong but you can get a M6, 1TB, 32GB Ram machine for £100 less than a M5 Pro, 1TB, 24GB Ram. So if you need ram the M6 is the one to go for as you’d probably bottle neck the ram than the processor given how capable these things are
