Apple Releases Redesigned Mac Chargers and 'World Travel Adapter Kit'

Apple today began selling updated versions of its 70W Power Adapter, 140W Power Adapter, and Power Adapter Extension Cable, all with a new "AC Connector 2."

World Travel Adapter Kit Feature with Charger
The updated power adapters and extension cable are available on Apple's online store in the U.S. and many other countries around the world.

Apple also released an updated version of its World Travel Adapter Kit that had disappeared from its online store in 2025, with U.S. pricing set at $39. Each of the international AC plugs included in the box now have the AC Connector 2 too.

AC Connector 1 vs AC Connector 2
Apple's power adapters have a removable plug, and the World Travel Adapter Kit contains various plug types for international travel:

The kit includes five interchangeable AC plugs:
Type A: North America, Japan
Type C: Continental Europe, Brazil
Type D: India
Type G: United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Singapore
Type I: Australia, New Zealand

In a new support document, Apple said its updated power adapters, extension cable, and plugs use the AC Connector 2 with a pill-shaped design to comply with "updated regulations." Apple's previous "AC Connector 1" has a notched design.

Apple began rolling out the AC Connector 2 in a few countries earlier this year, leading to some customers complaining about compatibility issues with Apple's older extension cables and World Travel Adapter Kit. Apple has now solved that problem by releasing these updated versions of the accessories with the AC Connector 2.

Apple today sent out invites for an experience in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, and the "Pro and tell" tagline on the invitation likely means that the rumored MacBook models with touch-enabled OLED displays will stick with MacBook Pro branding instead of the once-rumored "MacBook Ultra" name. The long-rumored "iPhone Ultra" ended up being named iPhone Duo, so speculation that Apple...

Hmm, ACC1 was based on IEC C7/C8 so you could always plug in standard cables too, which often came in handy in situations when you needed more length but didn’t have an extension cable with you. I don’t know what standard ACC2 is based on, if any, but from the looks of the diagram I won’t be able to use any of these cables anymore 👎

“Updated regulations” my arse 🤬

The old notched design was compatible with any standard C7 cable, which was great especially when needing more length, or you just forgot your cable etc. :(

Is that pill shaped design a standard somewhere? Never seen this before (at least not in Europe)

Looks like the new Power Extension Cable is braided and not that weird chalky plastic. I have a bunch that have deteriorated over time and are just so nasty; a dandruff-like powder comes off it with yellowing. That's a good change to braided!

It only took them almost SEVEN MONTHS to address this and officially come clean about whatever they hell they were doing vis-à-vis their power brick situation, and while they FINALLY offer a comprehensive, all-interoperable system (but Apple-only, it seems, and only in the new system, because they're obviously mutually incompatible; and do correct me if this is actually a new industry-wide standard and I'm wrong about the former), which will allow the same level of international compatibility and flexibility with the new extension cable offerings, they did indeed break IEC C8 plug compatibility for good in the process and have now introduced a new compatibility headache where none existed for DECADES. Yay (not).

To the editorial staff: please do better. @Joe Rossignol again, this warrants a more in-depth analysis, with proper context. WHOSE regulations did Apple cave in to, and why? Couldn't they have stuck to IEC standards in most countries and produce a few one-offs with these different plugs like they did back in April? Are they trying to, say, impose a new standard to the IEC and perhaps save some homes from burning down? Is there ANYTHING good to this move other than obsolescing MILLIONS of power bricks, plug adapters and extension cords? Where are the efficiency, environmental sustainability and interoperability-obsessed EU regulatory bodies in all of this? Food for thought. People were and are rightfully pissed at this, and maybe asking Apple and some experts in electrical safety regulations directly for more details would be interesting.

Edit: Message #1000! I just realised I was promoted to 65816, so at least there's something to be unreservedly excited about in this one. 😂
