by

Apple today released tvOS 27.2, the first major update to the tvOS 27 operating system that runs on the Apple TV 4K.

tvOS 27.2 can be downloaded using the Settings app on the ‌‌‌Apple TV‌‌‌. Open up Settings and go to System > Software Update to get the new software. ‌‌‌Apple TV‌‌‌ owners who have automatic software updates activated will be upgraded to tvOS 27.2 automatically.

Today's update adds support for four-speaker surround sound, a feature that works with the HomePod, HomePod mini 2, and the upcoming ‌Apple TV‌ 4K.

It allows the ‌Apple TV‌ 4K to be used with four ‌HomePod mini 2‌ speakers, four second-generation HomePods, or two HomePods and two ‌HomePod mini 2‌ speakers to get surround sound.

The ‌HomePod mini 2‌ launches on October 30, while the fourth-generation ‌Apple TV‌ 4K will come out on November 13.

I can't believe someone would spend that kind of money on a surround system with no center channel.

On the HomePod 27.2 release notes it says "HomePod software version 27.2 brings the new Sound Glow visual experience, home theater surround sound with Apple TV 4K (4th generation).

So probably not.
Too bad, then. I see no reason to spend €349 on a new Apple TV, when my current ATV 4K is working perfectly. I would have added two HomePod minis, though.

It is quite upsetting to see it detailed officially on the tech specs page that the Apple TV 4K (2nd gen) and later supports Siri AI on tvOS 27.2 and yet no support currently exists. Someone at Apple clearly messed something up because it *is* supposed to have support.

You can now seemingly update your Apple TV from inside the Home app too, alongside the HomePod updates.

I can't believe someone would spend that kind of money on a surround system with no center channel.

This. 4 HomePods is not enough to get the full Dolby Atmos experience. You also need overhead HomePods. It’s just another half baked gimmicky feature Apple gives us. They’re lazy AF. Why not invent an entirely new home cinema theater system?

Wow, having a 4.0 system for that much money?? LOL!

Yup. You're right. I would go as far as saying this can't even do 5.1 well, and if it can't do that, it definitely can't do a more complicated atmos well.
If you're into home cinema, then you might be aware that some of the best-reviewed systems of recent years were the Sony HT-A9 ('https://www.avforums.com/reviews/sony-ht-a9-home-theater-system-review.20351/') and more recent Bravia Theatre Quad ('https://www.avforums.com/reviews/sony-bravia-theatre-quad-speaker-system-review.22267/'). Both systems featured 4 speakers, but created a very convincing phantom centre channel as well as immersive Atmos effects, so I wouldn't write off a 4 HomePod system as being pointless. The detail is in how Apple tunes it to perform and how it copes without a subwoofer (which was an optional add-on for the Sony systems).
