OpenAI's ChatGPT Speaker Will Be Hockey Puck-Sized and Cost Over $300

OpenAI's upcoming AI device is a hockey-puck-sized, doughnut-shaped smart speaker with no display, reports Bloomberg. The product is meant to be easy to carry around with one hand, and it will have "moving parts that help give it personality," along with a price tag around $300 to $400.

OpenAI vs Apple Feature scaled
Bloomberg describes it as an AI-centric device that will stand out from current smart speakers. There are speaker grilles and microphones for voice-based chats with ChatGPT, and the AI model used will have human-like responses and will learn more about the user over time.

Moving components will help show when the speaker is responding, and lights will show that it is listening. A camera system and sensors will feed the product information about the user's environment. It is battery-powered so it can be moved from room to room, and it will reportedly use a premium metal material. In its theft of trade secrets lawsuit against OpenAI, Apple claimed the company misled an Apple supplier into developing a metal finishing technique similar to what Apple uses.

Former Apple design chief Jony Ive is designing the device for OpenAI. OpenAI acquired Ive's io device startup last year, adding multiple former Apple design team members to its hardware teams.

Bloomberg says the portable speaker "is not something Apple has come close to launching," which supports OpenAI's claim that it has no interest in Apple's trade secrets. OpenAI said today that it is "building something entirely new and different from anything at Apple." Apple maintains OpenAI has developed its hardware using information sourced from Apple.

Apple is working on a home hub that's supposed to come out as soon as this year, but it has a display and square form factor. Apple also has the HomePod mini speaker, but it is corded and not easily moved. Apple is also developing a tabletop robot that may share more similarities with OpenAI's device. It's said to have a display and a motorized arm for movement, but the robot isn't going to launch until 2027 at the earliest.

OpenAI has not stopped development on its new hardware product, and hopes to introduce it later this year ahead of a 2027 launch.

Apple's Siri AI Can Be Swapped Out for Claude, ChatGPT, Code Shows

Monday September 14, 2026 4:37 am PDT by
Code sleuth "pdfu" has uncovered iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate private frameworks that show Apple has designed its new Siri architecture to work with third-party AI models at what appears to be a surprisingly deep level. One mechanism called Model Delegation allows Claude to appear as a Siri extension in the same way as the existing built-in ChatGPT extension. In pdfu's video, shared on X,...

Claude, ChatGPT, and Grok Are Down on iPhone and Web

It is apparently not a good day for AI chatbots, as ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok are all down or experiencing issues for many users. OpenAI's status page acknowledges issues across ChatGPT and Codex, while Grok's website notes that it is currently experiencing issues as well. Likewise, Anthropic's status page indicates Claude is experiencing elevated errors. All of the companies are...

ChatGPT in Siri 'Persistently Underperforming,' Says OpenAI

Wednesday September 23, 2026 5:15 pm PDT by
OpenAI saw disappointing results working with Apple to integrate ChatGPT in Siri, according to court documents filed [PDF] in its ongoing legal fight with Elon Musk's company SpaceXAI (xAI at the time the lawsuit was filed). Apple added ChatGPT to Siri in December 2024, but users had to go through a multistep opt-in process, which added a layer of friction. By January 2025, OpenAI said the...

You have to love OpenAI leaking this info to Gurman to draw attention away from the lawsuit, and Gurman lapping it up for the scoop.

From Gurman: “The big takeaway here is that it looks, feels and acts nothing like an Apple product or anything the company is currently planning. OpenAI hasn’t found any evidence they’re violating trade secrets with this device, I’m told.”

Unless he’s looked under the hood of this magical donut for any potential trade secrets, Gurman is really basing this claim mostly on the word of an OpenAI employee clearly trying to change the narrative.

Who told Bloomberg this? Why would they mention it if OpenAI didn't tell them?
And how would OpenAI know anything about Apple's launch schedule for unannounced hardware?...

Friend.com has flopped because no one is stoopid enough to willfully wear a wiretapping device. I feel it is easy to see where this is going, and this will be a massive fail. These AI guys just crack me up - they're so high above the ground now that they no longer connect with truths that the rest of us hold for obvious.

I can just carry around a hockey puck in my pocket and people will think I’m cool. Like way back when I clipped a garage door opener to my belt so people thought I had a pager.
