Apple Sports App Updated With Widget, Expands to These 8 Countries

Apple Sports was updated today with a Home Screen widget, availability in more countries, and the ability to schedule Live Activities for upcoming events.

Apple Sports Widgets
The widget lets you view scores and schedules for your favorite leagues and teams at a glance. While the app remains available on the iPhone only, the widget can also be accessed on an iPad and Mac logged in to the same Apple Account.

In addition, the app has been released in eight more countries in Europe, including Austria, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. It was previously only available in the U.S., the U.K., and Canada.

When you schedule Live Activities for upcoming events, they automatically appear on your Lock Screen when the event begins, so you do not miss any action.

Last, the app now supports Ligue 2, Segunda División, Serie B, Primeira Liga, and 2. Bundesliga.

Launched in February 2024, the Apple Sports app shows scores, stats, standings, upcoming games, and more for a variety of leagues.

Apple Sports version 3.3 is available now in the App Store.

Is it just me, or is the UI and overall ergonomics of this app really awkward from Apple?

It doesn't even go fullscreen on iPadOS.

this is a welcome update as there are very few sports apps that provide very basic score update widgets. the automatic live activity updates are way too overkill and obtrusive.

being able to just see scores at a glance when you want to from the home screen is much simpler.

remember to go into the my team settings and turn off the live activities if you prefer the widget only scores.

Widget is very delayed in updating.
I tracked an MLB game and it seemed a little delayed but OK enough for widget. I'm not sure what the actual limitations are for widget refresh-rates, but there probably are some for battery reasons.

If you really want your phone blowing up with real-time updates, at least having the widget still makes it easy to tap right into the game where you can enable the live activities feature for that game if needed.

I swear before this update I was able to have the live activity on, but it didn’t vibrate my phone any time the score changed. Now I can’t get it back to the way it was. There doesn’t seem to be any setting to customize notifications anywhere— neither in the app nor in settings. Anybody know how I can get the constant notifications to stop?
No, there are no granular controls for live activities. It’s all or nothing. Thus, having a somewhat real-time widget with scores is your alternative vs. having your phone taken over with notifications and in your face score updates everywhere.
