We don't know what's included in the firmware, but the ‌Powerbeats Pro‌ 2 have a unique heart rate monitoring feature that's new to Apple earbuds, so it's possible the update is related to that feature.

Along with heart rate monitoring that's done through optical LED sensors in the earbuds, the ‌Powerbeats Pro‌ 2 feature Active Noise Cancellation, Personalized Spatial Audio, Apple's H2 chip for connectivity, and a redesigned acoustic architecture that allows for better sound.

The updated firmware can be installed on the ‌Powerbeats Pro‌ 2 by connecting them to power and ensuring that they are in Bluetooth range of an iPhone, iPad, or Mac that's connected to Wi-Fi. Firmware can be checked on the iPhone by going to Settings > Bluetooth and tapping the Info button next to the Beats headphones in the list. Android users can download new Beats firmware through the Beats app for Android.

Got one of these for my dad because he says he needs the hook shape as the regular airpods keep falling out. It seems like a pretty solid device and no issues despite the bad reviews

Hopefully it will fix the audio EQ... I don't think they sound as terrible as some say, but there's room for improvement. I would assume the drivers are different than the APPro2, otherwise they would've borrowed the firmware settings. Most would agree the APPro2 sound quite good for such low power consumption.

One thing to remember, if you have apple watch the HR tracking is done through watch. As for HR not working if you workout with music on exercise equipment. Absolute garbage. I have and like them. Luckily I don't use the pairing function to exercise equipment.

One detail that has been mentioned. I like that the flat surface is the "button" BUT and it is a HUGE BUT. It is ridiculously sensitive, if you try to adjust the headphones a little bit, it counts as a press. I have/had the beats fit pro. There a press was a press. With the PB2 it really is a"feather like" glance to register.

EDIT: I haven't upgraded yet to new firmware but overall I haven't had any issues. Good sound and noise cancelling, for me the canceling of the Airpods pro 2 is noticeably better which surprised me.
