With the exception of Vision Pro, Apple's 2024 hardware releases largely marked a year of steady refinement. It wasn't a year of massive overhauls across the board, but it did feature some key themes.

The Vision Pro, released in February, stands out as Apple's biggest product launch. While its $3,499 price tag keeps it squarely in early-adopter territory, Apple's first spatial computing device provides a hint at where the company expects technology to move over the coming years. Despite both excitement and criticism surrounding its capabilities, it's clear that 2024 was about laying the foundation, with its true impact likely to unfold in the years to come.

With minor refreshes to the MacBook Air and iPad Air, and no new hardware releases at WWDC, the star of the first half of the year was undoubtedly the iPad Pro, which gained OLED displays, a thinner design, the M4 chip, an all-new Magic Keyboard, a landscape front-facing camera, and more.

In the second half of the year, Apple virtually completed its transition to USB-C with the long-awaited refresh of the AirPods, ‌AirPods Max‌, Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Mouse. All that's left is the iPhone SE, which is now expected around March 2025.

The company also released new ‌iPhone‌ and Apple Watch models as usual in the fall, followed by a minor ‌iPad mini‌ refresh that added the A17 Pro chip and more memory for Apple Intelligence support. The ‌iPhone 16‌ lineup focused on ‌Apple Intelligence‌ and the Camera Control, while the Apple Watch Series 10 saw the introduction of a more refined design and sleep apnea detection.

Closing out the year, Apple turned its attention to its Mac lineup. The M4 family of chips made its way to the ‌iMac‌, ‌MacBook Pro‌, and ‌Mac mini‌, with the latter receiving a complete redesign for the first time in well over a decade. Next up to gain M4 chips are the ‌MacBook Air‌, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro in 2025.

This may be a bit picky, but Apple only LAUNCHED one product (Vision Pro). Everything else was just an update to existing products.

Definitely enjoying my Vision Pro, but only for videos. The technology behind Vision Pro is revolutionary, including much of the OS. The real issue is the product, which is too expensive for most people, and is also too heavy for the productivity piece. For videos I often am either lying down or in a chair which has head support. The first night trying it on felt to me like the first time using the original iPhone as far as the tech is concerned. Sadly the product itself is not there yet.

The iPad Pro is an awesome upgrade, but of course still held back by the OS. The new keyboard case is better in all aspects except it is now a little back heavy. The new pencil is better in every way. The OLED screen is incredible. Battery life has been sub par however.

I bought a M4 Mac mini but I couldn’t justify keeping it. I have an M1 Max MacBook Pro that I bring back and forth to work (and plug into LG 5k/4k monitors at work) and while the Mac mini was powerful enough to keep there, it seemed a little redundant. Good to know though the base level chip (with added RAM) is enough to keep up with my workload now.

Those are my top three. AirPods 4 are a win.

Biggest letdowns The USB-C peripherals which had no changes, and the pathetic update to the AirPods Max. I can see Apple not wanting to redesign them but to not add the new chip for Adaptive Audio and all the other AirPod Pro enhancements is just sad.

New iPhones are solid devices if you haven’t upgraded in a few years, but this was the first year since the original iPhone I returned and didn’t upgrade my iPhone. The 15 Pro Max is just too similar in terms of performance and cameras (two of which are identical), and the weight/size is just better to me as a usually prefer the standard phone. I actually tried going back to the regular sized pro this year but I found the 15 Pro Max still the right balance. The camera control was regressive to me in almost every way from just using the touch screen and other ways to access the camera.

I'm still (pleasantly) surprised that Apple released a new iMac just a year after the 2023 model. I've gotten so used to waiting a long time for iMac updates. And for this to come with 16 GB of RAM standard... what a glorious year.

Apple Vision Pro - this is the third time in my life. I've been an early adopter with Apple. The first was my Apple power book 145. That was the first truly standalone portable computer from Apple. That product line is still growing strong decades later. The second was my apple Newton 2100. I love that device and was brokenhearted when they killed it off. It was way ahead of its time and Apple was hemorrhaging money at the time. However, it's legacy in the myriad of smart phones. Certainly lives on

I'm optimistic that the Apple Vision Pro is going to thrive.
It's a cutting edge device and Apple is flush with money and has the ability to really turn this into an incredible new product line.
Otherwise all we're going to see is get another phone get another iPad get another laptop, etc. Apple really needs a new product space and AVP will definitely that.

AVP is indispensable for me because I travel a lot on airplanes and watching films with that is astonishing.

I do use it with my MacBook Pro for the incredible monitors and extra screens that provides.

However, I really wish Apple would design a new magic keyboard, which is small compact and has a trackpad instead of a mouse. I would love to travel with my Vision Pro and an appropriate magic keyboard that does not require a mouse.
