Apple Executive Comments on New iPad Mini Lacking 120Hz Display

Thursday October 29, 2026 1:47 pm PDT by Joe Rossignol

While the new iPad mini has an OLED display, the device does not support ProMotion, meaning the display's refresh rate is limited to 60Hz instead of 120Hz. ProMotion support would have allowed for the iPad mini's refresh rate to automatically adjust from 10Hz to 120Hz depending on the content being displayed, but evidently Apple has kept the feature exclusive to the iPad Pro among iPad...

Gruber is getting less and less likeable every year unfortunately.

Constantly calling out Mark Gurman even though he turns out be completely wrong, dumb Twitter takes, etc...

I’ll buy this front-facing display rumor if there’s a Cylon mode.

Otherwise I’ll stick with my previous understanding that this is an internal joke that has been taken as real; that it would look goofy, not humane; and that even if it didn’t look goofy, it would make no sense to add the financial cost of an outward-facing display to an already-expensive device, and even less sense to incur the battery-life drain of powering that external display on an already-battery-life-constrained device.

The only win here is that it’s not Rene Ritchie. I swear that guy craps out AirTags.

Gruber is getting less and less likeable every year unfortunately.

It’s all gone to his head … honestly thinks his opinions for some reason should have any/more weight to them vs anyone else.

Had to unsub to everything involving him a few years ago now.

He is a wonderful tool for Apple PR to use however … and boy oh boy do they use it.

John Gruber, Rene Ritchie, iJustine all culled from the same smelly pile of day old monkey exhaust.

Too much?

I had to stop watching after 18 minutes, John Gruber is just so incoherent and disturbing throughout this interview. Leave this kinda thing to professionals. Imagine if this was Steve Jobs? He would say, I don't have time for this. Get professionals: Kara Swisher, Walt Mossberg, even iJustine would do a better job, Nilay Patel.
