Apple Announces New Mac Studio With M2 Max and M2 Ultra Chips

Alongside a new Mac Pro desktop tower, Apple today announced second-generation Mac Studio models with M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips.

Mac Studio Display Feature Pink
As expected, the M2 Ultra chip is essentially a doubled-up M2 Max chip. It features a 24-core CPU, up to a 76-core GPU, a 32-core Neural Engine, and support for up to 192GB of unified memory. Apple says the Mac Studio with the M2 Ultra chip is up to 3x faster than the previous-generation Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra chip, released last year.

The new Mac Studio has the same overall design as the original model, but with a higher-bandwidth HDMI port that supports up to an 8K display at 240Hz. The back of the Mac Studio has four Thunderbolt 4 ports, a 10 Gigabit Ethernet port, an HDMI port, and two USB-A ports. On the front side, there are two USB-C ports and an SD card slot.

As with the new Mac Pro, and the latest MacBook Pro and Mac mini models, the Mac Studio now supports faster Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

The new Mac Studio is available to order starting today, and will begin arriving to customers and launch in stores on Tuesday, June 13. Pricing continues to start at $1,999 for the model with the M2 Max chip, while the M2 Ultra model starts at $3,999.

Apple Caught Off Guard by AI Demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio

Apple's unusually timed announcement of new Mac mini and Mac Studio models this week was driven by unexpectedly strong enterprise appetite for AI hardware, according to The Information. Apple normally releases new Mac models in the autumn, closer to October or November, making this week's announcement unusually early, falling just before the anticipated arrival of new iPhone models. The...

Apple Seemingly Made a Mistake When Announcing the New Mac Studio

Apple's press release for the new Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips last week initially stated that the computer had "next-generation SSD architecture built on PCIe Gen 6." However, as spotted by the French blog MacGeneration, Apple removed the PCIe 6.0 mention from the announcement shortly after it was published. The press release still mentions that the new Mac Studio has a...

New Mac Studio Can Be Clustered Together for Faster AI Performance

Multiple new Mac Studio units can be clustered together over Thunderbolt 5 and RDMA (remote direct memory access), creating a shared memory pool for running larger AI models. If four Mac Studio systems are clustered together, Apple says they can deliver 3x faster AI inference than running the same task on a single system, with the shared memory pool helping to load the largest and most...

I'm just about ready to buy a new machine, the Mini M2 Pro looks good, but Apple's insane $400 upgrade for 32 GB RAM on that machine makes the new M2 Studio a no-brainer. I'm pouncing.

This upgrade is welcome, but the storage prices should have come down. I'm not surprised they are the same, but all memory prices have dropped so much lately that it is highway-robbery to go from 512GB to 2TB for $600. Even if you said they are the best SSDs by a mile, they don't justify that cost. You can buy a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro M.2 currently for $160 on Amazon, there is no way to account for a 4x price increase except that Apple knows you can't do anything about it (and I'm sure they have bulk pricing). I can go along with all the other upgrade options pricing, but storage is just too high in 2023. At least start the base model at 1TB or something.

(I'm aware I can just get a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure and have fast external storage, but it isn't as ideal especially spreading user files across two volumes.)

Very close to pulling the trigger on this one, I wonder if they've addressed the fan and noise issues on some M1 Studios.

I'm surprised the Studio didn't get a price bump given the M2 Pro Mac mini. (simply because if found pricing to be the same for the 1tb - 2tb configs when you update the M2 Pro chip in the Mac mini and do 32gb ram, etc). With the Studio on M2 now, it's a bit better value.
