Apple Continues Promoting iPhone 7 Plus Portrait Mode With Two New Videos

Apple today shared two new videos on its YouTube channel, again designed to promote the Portrait Mode feature that's unique to the dual-camera iPhone 7 Plus.

Both videos are 15 seconds in length and show the Portrait Mode in action, with an explanation on how it blurs out the background for better portrait shots of people.

Portrait Mode, introduced in iOS 10.1, uses a shallow depth-of-field effect to make portrait photos "pop," mimicking the results that can normally only be obtained with a high-end DSLR and a telephoto lens. Portrait Mode uses the 56mm lens included in the iPhone 7 Plus, with Apple's image signal processor working to scan a scene to recognize people and other objects to separate the foreground from the background for the blurring effect.

Today's ads follow two similar ads that were released earlier this week, also designed to show off Portrait Mode on the iPhone 7 Plus.

My biggest problem with portrait mode is that it takes too much light to produce good results. I always try to take pictures inside and they either turn out really grainy or it flat out tells me there isn't enough light.

All these portrait mode commercials have been nice. Short yet entertaining, and well made but simple.

very nice but i still won't believe the photos they put out are taken with the iPhone only. they're also done with some extra lighting and other enhancements.

When are they going to quit cutting the top off of everybody's head in these things?

It's a cute feature, but it's not as dramatic as it's made out to be. The lighting and subjects in these shots are what make them interesting, that doesn't come with the phone.

I still really like their "Take Mine" commercial. It has lots of charm and also happens to make the iPhone look good. And they didn't need a narrator to tell us why it's good.
Not when they've got yodeling.

That's not strictly true in the sense you mean. Yes, of course they will have crew with reflectors and such to get the best results - but they use the iPhone to take them.

It's like saying taking photos at magic hour with great light is cheating compared to taking them indoors backlit against a window with crappy results. I wouldn't say that was cheating either. It's just common sense to anyone in photos.
Every iPhone comes complete with a Setting Sun and Colorful Greek Village, you can attach with a dongle.
