Jaguar and Shell Partnership Lets UK Drivers Use Apple Pay to Pay for Fuel Inside Car

Carmaker Jaguar today announced that a collection of its vehicles will support a new in-car cashless payment app that allows drivers to use Apple Pay to pay for fuel at Shell stations without having to use a traditional card payment at a pump. Drivers of the enhanced Jaguar F-PACE performance SUV, F-TYPE, XF and XE sports saloon model ranges -- and the latest Land Rover models -- will be able to take advantage of the app.

When drivers open the Shell app through Jaguar's InControl infotainment system, it can guide them to the nearest station. Once they get there, they can type in which pump station they're at, select how much fuel they need, and choose between Apple Pay and PayPal to complete the process. Although unconfirmed by Jaguar and Shell, drivers will still have to use a connected iPhone to authorize Apple Pay payments with Touch ID.

An email will automatically be sent so accounting expenses can be tallied up at a later date. Support is currently focused only in the United Kingdom, but the company said that the app will be rolling out globally soon.

"In a world where cash is no longer king, customers are increasingly using electronic payments and contactless cards. Making a payment directly from a car’s touchscreen will make refuelling quicker and easier. With this new system you can choose any pump on the forecourt and pay for the fuel even if you’ve forgotten your wallet or can’t find your credit or debit card.

You will save time because there’s no more queuing to pay in a shop, and for drivers with children, it won’t be necessary to wake them up, or unstrap them from their seats to take them into the shop. Expenses and tax returns will also be made much simpler, with no receipts to lose as these will all be sent electronically," said Peter Virk, director of connected car and future technology

The Shell app is part of a few enhancements that Jaguar announced to its F-PACE, XE, and XF models today, including new gesture technology to make it easier to open the vehicle's trunk, as well as the latest efficient Ingenium petrol and diesel engines. Jaguar's announcement focused on Apple Pay and PayPal, but the company confirmed that it's working on adding Android Pay support for fuel payments "later in 2017."

I do this already in my 10+ year old car... with the Shell app
yes the only change here seems to be that the app is integrated in the car's system, although even that's not clear. Given that you can't use Apple Pay without a fingerprint on the Touch ID button, I'm not seeing any benefits of this over having the app on a phone.

So this seems to be a pointless press release!

What's the point of having it inside your car vs. outside your car? You still have to get out and pump, unless you live somewhere weird like New Jersey. I'd be worried that I would forget to pay.

I guess one good point is that you would avoid skimmers.

Is there anyway to get a printed receipt at the pump when paying with Apple Pay with these apps?
Yes. Mobil allows you to choose a printed receipt within the app and the pump will print one out.

You rarely see it in the UK where this app has just launched, most of our petrol stations have self-service pumps.
Rarely see it in the us too unless it's New Jersey or Oregon.

I've been using this in my 2002 Renault Clio for the last 6 months! The only difference is that it displays on the screen in the Jaguar, but you still have to use Touch ID on your iPhone anyway?

The way I use it at the moment:

1. Pull up to the pump
2. Open the Shell app and select 'fill up and go'
3. App automatically determines which station I am at and I then type the number of which pump I am at and then authorise Apple Pay with Touch ID.
4. Green circle appears which means I can fill up.
5. I drive off and get a receipt to my email address instantly.

So literally no different?

Edit - I can also select maximum fuelling limits. If I were to select £20, the pump will automatically stop fuelling at this value. It's very handy.
