AirPods 5 vs. AirPods Pro 3 Buyer's Guide: Which Should You Buy?

Apple's AirPods 5 bring Active Noise Cancellation to its $129 earbuds for the first time. The $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case add longer battery life, volume controls on the stems, and a case speaker for Find My. The AirPods Pro 3 cost $249.

The ‌AirPods 5‌ arrived in September 2026, a year after the AirPods Pro 3. They continue to narrow the feature gap between the devices, but the Pro model still offers a sealed in-ear fit, substantially better noise cancellation, and hearing and workout features. Our guide helps to answer the question of how to decide which of these sets of AirPods is best for you.

The ‌AirPods 5‌ with Wireless Charging Case are the best choice for most buyers. For $20 more than the base model, you get an extra hour of listening time per charge with ANC, volume swipes on the stems, wireless charging, and a speaker that makes a misplaced case easier to find. Choose the $129 model if the lowest price matters most and you are content with its shorter battery life and USB-C-only charging case.

However, the ‌AirPods Pro 3‌ are worth the extra $100 over the higher-end ‌AirPods 5‌ if noise cancellation is your priority and you prefer a snug in-ear fit. Apple says they provide up to three times as much ANC as the ‌AirPods 5‌, since the ear tips create a physical seal. Their eight-hour listening time per charge is particularly useful on long journeys. In our hands-on testing, the ‌AirPods 5‌ sounded muddier than the Pro 3, particularly in the lower midrange.

The ‌AirPods Pro 3‌ are also the clear choice if you want their hearing health features or heart rate sensing during workouts without relying on an Apple Watch. Their charging case adds Precision Finding, too. If you dislike silicone ear tips, the ‌AirPods 5‌ let you keep the open-ear fit while getting nearly all of the everyday listening features shared by the Pro model.

AirPods frequently receive discounts from third-party retailers, which can narrow the ‌AirPods Pro 3‌'s $100 list-price premium over the $149 ‌AirPods 5‌. Check the latest prices using our Deals roundup before buying.

The hearing test and subsequent 'recalibrating' of the Pro pods is a real 'ease of life' feature for some, like me. Just recently I realised that my Pro 2 pods could do this. The hearing test told me something I knew (eardrum patching after scuba diving had left me with poor hearing in 1 ear) and then went about 'solving' it, at least when I have my pods in.

I remember Tim Cook once getting angry with an 'investor' who wanted Apple to do only what's gives an ROI. IIRC Cook was adamant that he wanted to contribute to accessibility breakthroughs for users, even without the ROI payoff.

Good call Tim!

For me, it is the AirPods 5. I like the open ear fit. Not going to upgrade from my AirPods 4 with ANC but I think the AirPods 5 will definitely be my choice.

I prefer the AirPods Pro 3 because the real seal with the IEM design improves sound quality and active noise cancellation.

I moved from Pro 3 to the 5's. The Pro's are great, but they lose the main thing the original AirPods had for me, a tiny case that you could forget you have on you. The Pro case has become this giant bulbous thing that I have to intentionally keep in my pocket, it is bigger than the ridiculous car key fobs that we have now. The 5 case is so tiny and unobtrusive, you can just keep it on you all the time, which to me, was always the point of AirPods.

I briefly had the Pro 3 and it felt like I was getting an deep ear cleaning or something.
Very unpleasant to me. I really never even use my APP2 as it is.

No interest in things lodged in there that much.

Good reports about AP5 on this front (great ANC w/o anything in my ear canal), but I'll be riding my AP4s into the ground.
My Pro 2s suffer from this to a degree. I live in them (city life), so probably an edge case, but it got so bad that my left ear was sending crippling, shooting pain right into the ear canal. It felt like a knife in my ear drum. It would come and go in waves, lasting for days then weeks, but over months and years, progressively got worse and worse. Funnily enough it kind of started when I passed out with them on day (never noticed any significant pain before that day). I guess having them press into my ear was the final straw. But since that day, it started becoming a real problem. Taking breaks from them made the pain largely go away (it would still flare up for a few min here and there) but as soon as I put them back in, pow, right in the kisser!

After doing some research and wading thru the dreck online, I traced it to the silicon tips and the pressure they put on the concha and tragus. I moved down to the small tips (from medium) and it went away overnight! I use them a lot less these days, but it’s amazing how pain moves around and how a small thing can make such a big difference.

The 3s are worse because Apple offloaded a lot more onto to the tips than before (I’m glad I returned them!). This has led to some people scraping their conchas and traguses to where they started bleeding! Moreover, if you move down to smaller tips, the earbuds won’t stay in as well as the 3s rely a lot more on the tips to stay in. It also means you shouldn’t use them for prolonged periods of time, which also sucks.

The 3s are a huge step back for the health and wellbeing of your precious ears.
