iOS 26.7.1 Fixes Vulnerability Used in Targeted Attacks

iOS 26.7.1, iPadOS 26.7.1, macOS Tahoe 26.7.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.8.1 address a major vulnerability that Apple believes was used against a small number of people.

Apple's security support pages say there was a CoreGraphics out-of-bounds write issue that could be exploited with a maliciously crafted file, allowing for arbitrary code execution. It has been fixed with improved bounds checking.

Apple says the flaw was exploited in an "extremely sophisticated attack" on targeted individuals running older versions of iOS. Apple's latest operating systems don't appear to be affected, and the iOS 27.0.1, iPadOS 27.0.1, and macOS Golden Gate 27.0.1 updates that came out today have no published CVE entries.

While the attack wasn't widespread, if you're still running a version of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe, or macOS Sequoia, you should install the new updates as soon as possible. Now that the vulnerability is public, it could be further exploited against users who aren't protected.

Who will even update to iOS 26.7.1 when they can update to iOS 27???
Yeah, who would be crazy enough to update to a much more mature and stable version of an OS (xx.7.1) vs upgrading to a less mature and stable version (xx.0.1)

Who will even update to iOS 26.7.1 when they can update to iOS 27???
Me for one on my iPad Air 3 because unlike iPhone where all models that could run iOS 26 can also run iOS 27 some iPad models that run iPadOS 26 got abandoned and don’t support iPadOS 27.

Who will even update to iOS 26.7.1 when they can update to iOS 27???
me. I never update to a major release. I'm waiting for either 27.2 or 27.2.1. Even my iPhone 13 mini which stands to gain performance improvements from Apple's Snow Leopard like apporach to iOS27.

Ordinarily I would agree. This one year specifically though, any device that can take 27 should take 27. 26 is the less stable and mature version, regardless of the amount of time it's been publicly available.

So little was actually changed in 27 that there just wasn't much room for bugs (New Siri as the sole new feature aside.)

27 is almost all bug fixes to things that 26 broke.
