iPod Touch Released 19 Years Ago Today

ipod touch originalThe first iPod touch went on general sale on September 14, 2007, nine days after Steve Jobs unveiled it at Apple's "The Beat Goes On" media event. The device brought the iPhone's multi-touch interface, Wi-Fi, and Safari browser to the iPod lineup for the first time, but it lacked cellular phone functionality and a camera.

iPod touch launched at $299 for 8GB and $399 for 16GB, and was pitched as a pocket-sized way to browse the web and buy music wirelessly through the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. It went on to see seven generations, before Apple discontinued it in 2022.

Is 19 a new kind of anniversary? Or are we doing this yearly now?

I used to own an iPod Touch 1st Gen, 4th Gen & 6th gen. The 1st gen was so much fun to use, specially the Music App with the Cover Flow

The iPod touch was great for kids, for many customer service-related industries (restaurant servers, airline agents, etc.), and as a home control pad. It's unfortunate that Apple didn't adopt the iPhone mini form factor to continue the iPod touch product line to the present.😢

Last Christmas I got my niece one of those children’s faux smartphones from Amazon. I thought about getting her an old iPod touch, then I realized it would be difficult for her or her parents to keep it updated and connected because it’s an obsolete product. If Apple had kept the iPod touch line going it would be a no-brainer purchase. Oh well.

This was my entry into the larger Apple ecosystem. I wanted an iPhone but without the (at that time) exorbitant monthly payments. Hard to believe it was that long ago.
