Apple last week announced that Verizon and EE will support iOS 27's new iPhone Handoff feature later this year. The feature allows you to switch between any two iPhones running iOS 27 while using the same phone number on each device.
iPhone Handoff is initially supported by T-Mobile (which is charging $5/month for it) and Deutsche Telekom. To learn more about the feature, read our previous coverage and Apple's support document.
The carriers probably see this as free money.
I hope Verizon doesn't charge $5/mo for it (they probably will). It's a cool feature, but shouldn't cost that much extra in my opinion.
To add to what alee wrote, for me it's for international travel to avoid risk of theft ('https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ios-27s-iphone-handoff-feature-limited-to-t-mobile-and-deutsche-telekom-at-launch.2488868/?post=34775566#post-34775566'). Another reason is that more countries are doing electronic device searches ('https://www.newsweek.com/countries-where-border-agents-can-search-phone-11760628'). I like the idea of being able to easily switch to a back-up iPhone for traveling that has fewer apps on it (just keep the basics) and less of your personal data.
This is a sincere question: What are some use cases for using this feature, same number on two phones seems redundant, Thanks in advance.
