Apple in Talks to Pay Publishers for News Content to Power Siri AI

Apple has approached publishers to establish content deals that would give Siri AI access to current news and information, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Apple is proposing multiyear agreements where publishers would receive payment when their content is used, which is different from standard AI deals. Typical deals between AI companies and news organizations have set fees for broad content access. Apple has discussed a nine-figure budget for the payments.

The Wall Street Journal says Apple previously inked deals that included AI training rights. Apple has also worked with publishers for its Apple News+ service since 2019, though some publishers were unhappy with the content deals and ended their partnerships.

‌Siri‌ AI is set to launch this fall in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. ‌Siri‌ AI is a major departure from the prior version of ‌Siri‌, and Apple has an incentive to ensure accurate news headlines. An iOS 18 notification summary feature turned out to be an embarrassment after Apple Intelligence generated false headlines that misled users. Apple ended up removing news summaries for more than a year while it made improvements.

I remain shocked there hasn’t been more consequences for Anthropic and OpenAI given their outright intellectual property theft.

Good.

Responsible sourcing and fair compensation for your work is healthy for any ecosystem. The way AI systems are set up now massively devalues creation of content as they scrape, and are designed to keep everyone inside chat bots instead of passing people back to the sources.

"Hey guys, we will pay you now to make you obsolete in the future! Any takers?? Yes! You at the back! No, we will not be serving cake, next!"
This completely misinterprets the purpose of Apple licensing news.

You struck a sore but important point. Just because a media agency or corporation publishes something as news does not mean that it is therefore reliable. It's nice that Apple is properly paying to source their news information for AI use, but that still does not mean that the news itself was accurate or reliable.
But the existence of unreliable news has been universal since the beginning of time with the first human to tell something to another human.

So it really is a separate issue/concept entirely.

This is more about paying sources for their content rather than just TAKING it. It isn't a guarantee of quality, that's up to the reader to determine. (Sigh.)

We’re all reading less and it’s making us dumb. Read news written by humans from trustworthy sources that have an independent reputation to defend. There are few of these left, but they exist. And read from several different sources and then try to discern the truth. Or just swallow the hallucinations and biases of the tech bros and their products until you don’t know what truth is anymore. It really is up to you. Stop consuming the slop.
