Apple Pencil Pro Rolling Out in Apple's Refurbished Store at a Discount

Over the past month, the Apple Pencil Pro has been rolling out in Apple's online refurbished store, for the first time since the accessory launched in May 2024.

Apple Pencil Pro
The certified refurbished Apple Pencil Pro is available at a roughly 15% discount compared to brand new, which is typical for Apple's refurbished products.

At the time of writing this, refurbished Apple Pencil Pro inventory is available in Australia, Belgium, China, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, and the U.K., but not yet in the U.S., Canada, France, New Zealand, or any other countries where Apple directly sells refurbished products.

When it becomes available in the U.S., the refurbished Apple Pencil Pro will likely cost $109 there, down from $129 brand new. At the time of writing this, Amazon is selling the Apple Pencil Pro brand new for just $99 in the U.S., so the refurbished option is not a great choice right now, since you would be spending more money for a used product.

Apple's refurbished products are generally in like-new condition. Apple says all of its refurbished products undergo "full functionality testing," and any defective modules identified in testing are replaced. All of the refurbished products are also put through a "thorough cleaning process and inspection," before being repackaged, according to the company.

Key features of the Apple Pencil Pro include the ability to squeeze the accessory to bring up a tool palette, a gyroscope that allows users to roll the Apple Pencil Pro for precise control of shaped pen and brush tools, haptic feedback for certain actions, and Find My support. It is compatible with iPad Pro models with the M4 chip, iPad Air models with the M2 chip or newer, and the iPad mini with the A17 Pro chip.

The pencil cannot be opened or repaired, so all Apple is doing is maybe changing the nib and giving it a wipe over, lol. For a $20 discount.

Good to know about its availability but when new ones could be bought from retailers at a better price than Apple refurbished, I see no reason to purchase one from the refurbished store. Not sure how many will be buying this.

I have an Pencil Pro, that I bought around the time I got my 11" M4 iPad Pro last year (along with the new MK)... But I got it from Amazon for $99 (where it's currently again on sale right now at this price) during lead-up to Black Friday / "Thanksgiving-week" sales last year.

It's a curious development... I used to think Apple Refurb was a solid deal / good value at times. As many know, it's basically as good as new, as Apple does a really thorough job on their certified refurbished items. Very different than the usual "refurbished" or "renewed" stuff you find out there.

However, in the past few years, here in the US you're finding Amazon regularly discounts Apple gear. And it's all official / legit (through Amazon.com directly), new-in-box, not through some 3rd party.

Now it's not all items (and no iPhones). But iPads, Airpods/Accessories (like the pencil / pencil pro), Watches, and even Macs (MBP, MBA, Mac mini). As long as you don't need to buy when it first comes out - throughout the year, there are enough "holidays" which are excuses for a deal, where after a few months you can get Apple gear with some reasonable discounts. Now with Macs, the downside is that you can only get the "base models", the few configs Apple sells pre-configured. If you need to upgrade memory/storage beyond that, then you still have to pay full price directly from Apple.

But as long as you're in that "ok with base config" crowd, the discounts come regularly enough... I'm finding for those products, it makes less sense to get Apple Refurb now, where for basically the same price (often even cheaper), you can get brand new.

I guess the one thing Apple Refurb still has over Amazon, is if you do need an upgraded config. This is one of the few places you can get one of those bigger configs (Eg. 32gb memory / 1tb+ storage) at a discount, but with full confidence in quality.

Well, buy a new one if you don’t feel that’s worth saving $20. Apple refurbished products are generally in new condition.

It’s likely they are returns.

Eh find someone with a student discount. In the UK I got a free Apple Pencil Pro and £100 off on my M4 iPad Pro.
Some U.S. universities' campus tech stores give their alumni association members the same discount as students. My alma mater does that for both Apple and Dell.
