Proton VPN Launches Native Apple TV App, Adds Vision Pro Support

Proton today released its native Apple TV app, allowing users to access VPN services directly on their Apple TV following tvOS 17's introduction of built-in VPN support last year. The company has also announced compatibility with Apple Vision Pro.

The new tvOS app enables users to connect to ProtonVPN's network of over 8,500 servers across 112 countries, providing access to geo-restricted content while maintaining privacy from internet service providers. The interface has been specifically designed for television screens, according to the company, and features larger icons and remote control optimization for comfortable viewing on a television.

David Peterson, general manager of ProtonVPN, noted that the Apple TV app was "one of the most expected and requested features" from their community. The service promises 4K streaming capabilities without buffering or throttling.

The app is available to subscribers with paid plans, including Proton VPN Plus, Proton Unlimited, and Proton Visionary. Users can download the app directly from the App Store on their Apple TV.

I am very surprised Apple allowed this into the store. Wouldn't this essentially mean users can change locations to access different streaming services offerings?
Uhhh.... Apple added VPN support on the AppleTV a while back. This isn't some random vendor announcing some sketchy technology.

use it for what? watching youtube?
Streaming services have different offerings depending on the country you're in. A VPN lets you pretend you're in a different country so you can watch programming that's not available in your country. In some cases, you can watch programs that are exclusive to a service in the US but may be available bundled with another service, ie., Disney programming might be available on Netflix in other countries.

sounds useless. does it mean you can watch shows from other regions? What benefit does vpn have for appletv?
it’s actually incredibly useful. i live in mexico but use a vpn on my appletv to watch youtube tv, netflix, max, peacock, and everything else from the united states. i was thrilled when they added the vpn option in 17.

This is what I use it for with NordVPN. With Apple TV allowing multiple logged in Apple accounts I can easily download streaming apps that are localised to other countries.
